JV player got a concussion in our last game last Friday. Apparently got hit by a blocker, got a concussion, got up, got knocked down and hit his head on the ground. The game video is inconclusive, can't see anything that you'd say 'wow, that was a big hit'. www.abc10.com/story/news/local/2015/11/12/angels-camp-football-player-suffers-two-concussions-during-game/75685952/We've gone to the hawk tackle which has helped, we've preached to the kids to keep their heads out of the play, all that. We bought Riddell and Xenith helmets so we can fit kids better, trying anything we can to keep the kids safe. He's been in the hospital since last Friday night, looks to be there another week to 10 days. We're all trying to figure out how to deal with this.

We had something similar happen that I need to talk to our boys about. Freshman player gets a minor concussion during their last game but no one notices, he tells one of the other players he might have one, second kid doesn't say anything and the original boy gets another, BIG concussion during the last play of the game. He had to get airlifted up to Stanford and is probably done playing, which is awful.
He isn't a good decision maker in general (IEP kid), but we obviously need to educate our kids better with regards to the difference between 'ratting' on someone and looking out for their general well-being.
We hawk tackle, we lift like crazy, we preach safety while being physical, sounds like your guy got unlucky whereas my guy did something foolish and a friend didn't speak up for him.

Unfortunately, when playing a game where colliding into others while wearing hard shells one is going to incur risk. As a football community I think the best thing that can be done is to put this risk into perspective. Show how many teens die each year in car wrecks compared to football. Show how many die from going to prom and compare to football.

What I dread is the dead period between summer and fall when the guys get on their ATV's, dirt bikes, skateboards...go diving into shallow water, get into pick-up games at the park, light off fireworks, or bounce around on trampolines.
Each of the above has resulted in injuries for my guys over just the last 3 seasons. Curiously we have had zero concussions. We have fewer injuries on the field than some of them have during the off season.
Keep teaching and preaching. Use this injury as a teaching point for the future. Stress that there is nothing "manly" about hiding a possible injury.

No helmet is concussion-proof...doesn't matter what brand. We got heads-up certified and this message was taught in that training- Helmets prevent skull fractures not concussions. Well-fitting helmet lowers the risk but there is an inherit risk in collision sports.
We had a LB get a concussion that we didn't notice until later, then suffered another later in the game and had to go to hospital- missed 7 games this season. Had no idea he got his first one...until after the game and we couldn't figure out why the defensive calls were all jacked up. He was our signal caller and it all made sense.
Good news is he's back and has a sensor system in his helmet- if a big hit happens my phone and the trainer's beeper goes off and he must come off the field.

Not really something that a program in my area could afford to install in all helmets. Probably $150-200. The parents of the player actually sprang for it. It's called shockbox.
