I HATE blaming kids for not caring. I think it's ludicrous that we could even insinuate that kids would lift weights and condition all year but then not care how they did in season. However, I don't know how else this could be possible.
1. Starting QB is a d!ckhead. We try to help him grow up and he finally shows signs of being a leader. We praise his demeanor in film. We say we are playing our rivals and we need that kind of effort up at the front of the ranks. Next day he shows up with a note that says he's been suffering from "concussion like symptoms" since week 1 and that he should be limited to whatever he feels comfortable with until reevaluation. Huh? He doesn't play against our rivals. Then, the next week he is medically cleared 100%. We moved him to receiver where he can only be a distraction to the CB covering him instead of our entire team.
2. Starting DE misses a game to go to church camp.
3. Starting TB misses a game to make cardboard shields covered in glitter for leadership and the homecoming rally.
4. Starting OT gets called out for not trying hard enough during practice and he turns around and says "Sometimes I just don't care." IN THE MIDDLE OF A PLAY IN PRACTICE!
5. We tell the back up OT that he is going to play since we want kids who care. He doesn't show up every day leading up to a game to "make up credits in class" but he has a 3.5 GPA. How convenient.
I've never been around a group this dysfunctional in my life. Why are they so scared to succeed?!

Send hudl tape on any kid that is being recruited. Have a banquet. Say something nice. Then run the hell away with your head held high knowing you did your job, but this job is over. Time for a new one.

This year Ive taken over a new program that has been down since basically the dawn of time...and even more down over the past 5 years....and this is the sort of stuff I find here as well. It's not a priority to many of them. I'm not sure "don't care" is the right term for all of them--but no doubt some have other priorities above football. Where I am they have been allowed to do so, and we are breaking them of those behaviors. You're not going to the things you mention and play. Of course, some of it comes from their parents, who just don't get it, either. Now, if you've been there a while and this is what you're getting, I don't have an answer except maybe what silkyice said. I know if I don't get those bad habits broken here, I won't be successful and it will be time to follow the Ol' Head Ball Coach into retirement.

Those kids rarely ever get out of my dog house. The first chance I get to send them elsewhere, I do. I had a kid who said he didn't want to lift because he wanted to be body builder. Kid you not. I have had the concussion thing happen out of nowhere in season as well. They miss essentially miss half the season though when they pull that now.

Somehow we won a lot of games, though.

I can't beat the dogs birthday but i had a kid miss one year on his birthday to buy a car and his parents had the salesman write a note because we required a drs note for missed practice

These are hilarious, especially the dogs birthday and salesmen excuse note. Had a horrible practice with missing kids, poor effort, etc. These stories definitely keeps things in perspective for me.

Had a kid not play this year because he didn't want to get hurt because he was going into the Marines... "Hello dumba$$, people are going to be shooting bullets at you and your worried that your going to get hurt playing football"
Another good one. "Coach I have to leave practice early.. It's my mom's boyfriends cousins birthday....Huh?"

Had a kid miss practice after a loss (last year) because it was his birthday and dad took him hunting. OL coach made the kids sing "Happy Birthday" to him with the following lyrics:
"Happy Birthday NOBODY CARES Happy Birthday NOBODY CARES Happy Birthday YOU JACKA$$ HAPPY BIRTHDAY NOBODY CARES"
Totally wrong but the point was hammered home. Your personal wants and needs do not trump the team's.
I heard about this stunt for the rest of the year (e-mail, parent meetings etc.)
Funny as hell though

Wait.....you're not satisfied with their game performance. WHO keeps starting them?
You're probably starting them because they are seniors and are physically more mature than anyone else on the roster. {censored} em
Start freshmen, at least you'll get experience out of the deal

I feel your pain, brother. I posted something similar, except we're 0-8 heading into the last week. At least you guys have squeezed out a few wins! How's the underclass look? Any possible bright spots on the horizon?
I hate blaming parents (hell, I'm a parent, too, like a lot of guys on here) but I feel like a lot of these kids' attitudes towards hard work and commitment are learned at home. One thing we've had a problem with this year is parents keeping their kids out of practice (and sometimes games) as a punishment for things they do at home. My argument is that if they want their kids to learn about hard work and commitment, don't keep them away from something they've (allegedly) committed themselves to. I've gotten similar incidents in class (i.e., "Johnny couldn't do his homework last night because he had to do extra chores...please excuse his missing work"). It's maddening.

I've had two kids quit (1 Jr, 1 Sr). One kid got pulled for grades (Sr). One kid is faking injuries so he doesn't have to play (Jr). I'm down to 4 OLBs total. That seems like a lot, but it's 3 kids and 1 body. The starting WS right now is the converted FS who starts at WR (Jr). SS is split time between the starting RB (Jr) and starting Y (Jr). Only got 4 OLBs on the Frosh/Soph team and only 1 of them feasible.

i'm glad you have had some wins, like I posted earlier in the season, we almost couldn't finish the season because of injuries, we are 0-9, have been blown out in every game but one, my kids still come back to practice everyday and try, we've gotten better, but probably not enough to beat our district opponent this Friday that beat us earlier in the season, I told the kids we are going to blitz every play and fly around on offense and we will let the chips fall, I know I have a couple of kids thinking about bball, they may puss out, but I think they will go hard, it is a win that we finished the season and everyone is healthy, I don't tell them this, we just talk about what we are going to do and how we will adjust, but I know our athletes will not match up, keep a positive mindset, you got some that care, you got some wins and write down all those excuses, we all could write books on what has happened

We lost our game this past week because there was a huge lack of focus. Kids were way too worried about looking good in pink, cared more about the powder puff game than our region game, and was worried about homecoming parade and crap...Pisses me off
Sometimes I just wonder what if football is going to be extinct in 10 years because kids are soft and would rather be in a fashion show.

BEST.....STORY.....EVER..... My starting C last year missed a practice because it was his dog's birthday lmao. I feel like I'm in an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. At that one super dysfunctional program I was at a few years back, roughly half our team would skip practice the day after the new Madden game came out. My favorite story was the 2 way starting lineman who "broke his shoulder" goofing off over the weekend. He showed up to practice with his arm in a sling. Then he took the sling, in front of his entire team, and was waving his arm around to show that it wasn't really hurt while we were in Team. That same kid quit on us before the last game, then asked us for help getting him a football scholarship to "not someplace good, just someplace that sucks where I'd get a chance to play, like Kentucky." We also had a kid (our "stud"... at least in terms of weights and 40 times) miss his senior night to go to the beach with his girlfriend. This year, we've had some dysfunctional stuff at my current stop, but it's all of the spoiled and entitled variety. One kid blamed his sprained ankle on the playcalling...

Last week I had my starting middle linebacker miss practice because he had a gym appointment booked with his personal trainer. Twenty years of coaching and that's a first. Welcome to JV ball I was told.
