I opened my dumb a$$ mouth one year and told our boys that if we beat (said rival team) that I would dress up the next week and run Oklahoma. I was about 36 at the time. I came out fully dressed and they didn't recognize me at first. Once they got a look at me, they started whooping it up, big time. My heart was beating faster than a jack rabbit. We had a few D-1 athletes on that particular squad. The first rep, I held my own and I started talking a little Sh*t. The next rep, a kid who eventually played safety for Penn State, and another kid who ended up at Rutgers lined up. Needless to say, the backside of my jersey needed a bunch of Tide to get all the grass stains out. The kids still talk about it when they see me. It was a hoot. But, my wife was not happy at all when she heard about it. I'd be way more worried about blowing out a knee or something else stupid happening to me than I would be about injuring a kid at this point. I'm still young but my body already doesn't feel like it used to. As a player, I was an OL and a wedge buster on KO team. Run full speed 40 yards and collide with another group of guys running full speed with the intent of blowing each other up. Never got hurt too badly playing football. The other day, I accidentally stubbed my pinky toe on a coffee table and had to sit down for a second lmao.

I've never seen a coach suit up. A few years ago, though, I was trying to organize a fundraising summer alumni game. We had a group that would meet a couple times a week (I was out of state, so I was only there on weekends). I know the Varsity coaches gave out helmets a few times for these guys to join in on 7-on-7. I know the guys liked it, but it seems like a pretty bad idea.
I can see using a helmet as a coach for some drills. I hate stepping it to demonstrate or run something and a kid smacks you with his facemask. A few times with that I wasn't so keen on stepping in anymore. Don't want to lose teeth.

btw I love playing scout team QB. Makes defense go by so much faster. Very fun on option weeks when I get to read it.

Come a certain point every season we end up with a couple coaches playing DB or receiver, but never in pads. I take my fair of share of bumps in Indy though, but it's worth it to emphasize ball security.

We had a young piss-n-vinegar coach a few years back, fresh out of college. He hyped himself up to play QB, running his mouth to our team...he forgot to wear cleats to play an option QB during a rainy practice. He spent the entire practice overselling option fakes and falling HARD on his @$$. The defensive players got nothing done, they were too busy laughing.
To save face, he decided to do it again the next week. Went 0-24 throwing the ball.
We still laugh at him when we see him (usually in the lobby at the AFCA, as he's a FCS assisant these days) and I would never pad up and play. It's a dumb idea. You are best off convincing the youngest/dumbest coach on staff to do it. It'll be much more productive for you that way.

Had a head coach I worked for try to play scout RB years ago (we were both under 30), things went sour very quickly when a kid took a shot at his jewels at the bottom of a pile. Clearly was not a good idea, but kind of funny looking back.

So heres my whacky idea... We are down to 22 kids for various reasons. To get a good look, we've kicked around the idea of letting one of our coaches put on a helmet and play Scout Safety and Scout RB. Anyone ever done this to get a much better look? I assume the first time coach lays out some kid its an issue and we are all going to get fired. I remember back in high school (the dark ages of the 90s) that two coaches dressed out in uppers and played OLB so we could get a look for our biggest game. Anyone ever done this? We'll have coaches play QB to run the scout team or maybe fill in at FS or CB if we're thin that day. However, they're in shirts and shorts and never, EVER hit anyone. If you're that low on numbers (I've coached teams with even fewer kids), do half line, skelly, work against cans, etc. to get your looks. IMO, doing a full on 11 vs 11 team session is nice but not always necessary.

Is it ok to break off a run, stiff arm a kid and then stand over him screaming sh!t? If that kids name is a senior Tyler...YES...luckily our freshman ILB stuck Tyler for us this past week while we were the JV team defense was working against our 2 scout team huddles! Btw, Tyler did somehow lead us in tackles during our 33-28 win last night...let's just say while he plays OLB most his tackles came at the safety level.

Last year I was working a block destruction drill with the LBS, I was holding a shield; I did nothing more but mis-step and bam; my knee swelled up to the size of a cantaloupe.
Good thing was it got me a bunch of free PT, but man, I couldnt imagine suiting up and hitting anymore. I'd be good for about 2 plays and then probably tear something. And heck I'm only 35

No, and I think it's a bad idea sprinkled with good intentions. Nothing good can come of it. A school around here had some college-level kids come to practice during the post-season to simulate opponents...had the state association been able to prove it, they would have forfeited and coach get fired.

I am 25 in my 1st year coaching and I've been in at multiple positions for team periods but never in pads, just cleats. The players are allowed to engage with me but if I am the ball carrier it's never any contact just fit up or as scout QB they can rush and tag me but I'm still allowed to throw the ball. I've had a few kids ask me to put the pads on, I tell them they've lost their minds, I'm beyond puberty you don't even know what your body is capable of and I don't need the lawsuit.

We've all had to play scout QB at some level or time. But I've NEVER worn pads, helmet, nothing. I've taken some bad shots too.

King of Queens scene (mentioned above).
I will run scout QB when needed but also feel like I'm stealing reps from the developing guys. It can be fun, but dangerous. Had a player's helmet "bump" my head after a throw once, felt like my skull was cracked for weeks, along with lingering head aches. Still, putting on a helmet for a better look nowadays is tantamount to a resignation letter.
