So this is my season so far...we're 0-5, in case you can't figure that out from some of the following gems. -Back during our summer workouts, we had a kid who locked himself in the porta potty and refused to come out. Kept saying he couldn't get his poop out and he was dying. We kept trying to get him to open the door and come out so we could take him to the locker room. When we finally got the door open he had stripped down BUTT NAKED. I slammed the door shut, told him to get dressed, and we finally got him up to the locker room were he managed to completely destroy the toilet. The kid is...odd, to say the least. -A kid missed practice, and the next day when I asked him where he was he said he was reading a book. I tried giving him the benefit of the doubt and asked if it was for homework and he absolutely had to get it done. "Nope...I just couldn't put it down. I wanted to see what happened next". The book he was reading? Harry Potter. -On our way to a JV game a kid hands me his phone and says "so-and-so is on the phone...he missed the bus and his mom's driving behind us". Kid had only been on the team a week or so and he hadn't been added to the roster yet so I missed him during roll call before we left. He also showed up to the school an hour after he was supposed to be there, and about 10 minutes after bus departure time. Mom gets on the phone and is yelling at me because she doesn't know where we are and he's just going to have to miss the game. This is after she had followed the bus for a good 30 minutes. -Same kid as above story didn't show up for a varsity game the next Friday night. We dress every sophomore through senior for Friday nights, and I asked him why he missed the game. He said "I didn't know there was a game". -Starting QB broke his hand first game. Out 4-6 weeks. He hasn't returned yet. -Backup QB, now starter, ended up getting 2 packs of cotton up both nostrils the next week because the o-line couldn't block a soul. He was regularly getting sacked by 3-4+ guys each time we tried to pass. Watching the trainer pull out the cotton packing was one of the grosses things I've ever seen, and I grew up on a dairy farm. -Had a kid miss practice because he was back to school shopping with his mother. -One of our gunners, during a varsity game, caught our punter's kick as he's streaking down the sideline. He ran it in for the "touchdown". He couldn't understand why he didn't score. The worst part? Our fans went crazy because they thought it was a TD. -Starting center had an emergency appendectomy a few days ago...he's done for the year now. I feel bad for him, because he's a senior and a good kid. -Had a kid get a concussion (allegedly) from sitting up too fast in the bottom bunk of his bunkbed and bashing his head into the bed. We doubted it was actually a concussion, but he told the trainer all the right symptoms so he had to sit out 8 days per concussion protocol. -Another kid lied about his symptoms (and later admitted it) so he wouldn't have to play the next week. He also had to sit out 8 days due to his "concussion". -Just today after practice 4 players were in a car, driver was going 65 in a 35 residential area. The MENSA member in the passenger seat decided to jerk the wheel as a goof. They ended up going off the road and took out two trees, totaled the car. Thankfully everyone was uninjured, as it could have turned out with a much more tragic ending. One of the 4 players took off running after the wreck and we had to track him down and bring him back to the scene. It's one of the most surreal seasons I've ever been a part of. There's even more weird, non-sensical things I'm forgetting, but honestly I don't want to remember some of it.

The porta John story is the best!
Hell out Starting Qb is out with a concussion and he thinks I hate him. So Marches Dad in the office...I need to talk to you. My son thinks you hate him..."Sir.. I love your son.. Your son was the starting QB when he got hurt. He is the starting QB when he get back. Him trying to get a date with the trainers is what I have a problem with" Dad Looked at the kid and asked him "Who is your GF..." this is the first time the Dad heard he had a GF.. Dad lays into his son about how girls are nothing but distractions. "You dont have a D#$N consussion..Your @8$$y whooped" Dad..gets up and shakes my hand and apologizes for taking up my time.. It was all the coaching staff could do to not bust out laughing when his Dad said that.. Needless to say, the young man is in the QB coach's pocket at practice.

I feel sorry for you coach. I had similar things happen a couple years ago. Every star gets hurt or suspended for drugs or fighting. Just gotta do everything you can to keep morale up and get on cruise control.

you need to write all those down, you might have a book in the future, I have the same problem as you, I had one kid who would read a book when I gave water breaks, which is only 2 min. had to yell at him to put his helmet on and get back in, he kept missing practice, so I said the next time you miss just turn in your gear, we have our one chance to get a win this Saturday, we have had some good practices this week, I have 11 kids, we are 8 man, I got kids starting that never played before, we've gotten better, would love to get this win, we have worked hard, but I just keep saying get better each play and try to stay positive, win or lose the kids have played their hearts out this season and that is what matters

you need to write all those down, you might have a book in the future We've been saying the same thing as a staff all season. I really wish I had been writing everything down from the beginning. I still don't think people would believe it all. Heck, I don't know if I believe everything that's happened. Thanks for the encouragement. I've been a part of losing seasons before, but we've always still managed to compete and the kids worked hard and you could tell it mattered to them. Unfortunately I can't say the same thing about this team. As a whole, most kids don't seem to care. We have no leadership (we didn't even name captains because there aren't any kids who have emerged as leaders). We're trying to just find the positives where we can and build from there, focus on getting better each week and stay positive. It's hard to do, though, and we know as a staff that or attitudes and demeanor will trickle down to the kids. It was a perfect storm this year...we graduated 24 seniors from a team that started seniors in 21 spots last season. We also had small junior and sophomore classes (current seniors and juniors), and we had 4 juniors coming back who were going to be solid contributors (2 receivers, RB, and a lineman...RB was all-state on both sides of the ball). However, our district population is over 60% military due to a major Air Force base being entirely in our district boundary and all 4 of those kids' families got transfer orders.

That sounds like our season. Our RB coach took a second full time job can be around all the time. Two starters busted for being high at school today. Starting defensive end had to quit because he broke his house rules. Happened today. Best o lineman blew out his knee in last week's game. With drug busts and injuries we are down our top 3 receivers. AND we play the #2 team in the state tomorrow. Season from Hades.

HC at a small private school here. Was at our middle school game tonight. We were down 19-0 at half and the other team is steady throwing the ball all over the field to start the 3rd quarter. Our MS coach looks over at me like "Can you believe this chit?!" I just say at some point we have to line up and stop them. Giving them the benefit of the doubt...it really wasn't that bad. Even calmly and politely told our MS coaches to stop complaining in front of our players about the other team throwing it, how it sends the wrong message, no excuses blah blah. So our team runs the ball every play during the 4th quarter, just trying to get out of there. At this point it's 35-0 for the other team.
57 seconds left in the game, they get the ball back....half back pass. Couldn't really say anything to our coaches about that one.

Anybody ever win with a team that just isn't that great? We won 32-12 tonight to improve to 6-1, but we really aren't that loaded with talent. It's astonishing. Most teams are more athletic than us, bigger up front etc.
I'm not griping here, I just don't understand.

Most teams are more athletic than us, bigger up front etc. I'm not griping here, I just don't understand. Nobody likes a braggart... I've had teams before like that. The difference is they made up for lack of talent with being hard workers, coachable kids, mentally tough, etc. So kudos to your guys! So last night we played another 0-6 team, lost 35-14. Lost my right tackle to a phantom ankle injury that prevented him from finishing the game. He literally crawled off the field, and was hopping around like he only had one leg. Guess which kid was the first one who ran off the bus when we stopped at McDonalds before our 2 hour ride home? Backup RT was out of the game earlier with a "concussion" (kid who lied about being concussed in my original post). He told the team doctor it was his third concussion of the season... #2 QB broke his leg in our JV game Thursday night. One of my backup guards suffered a complicated dislocation of his pinky finger horsing around in the locker room before practice Thursday. My starting left guard played pretty bad last night, kept getting beat inside on pass pro. I always preach to my guys we have to protect inside-out, and our cardinal sin in pass protection is getting beat inside. He comes off the field and I'm getting into him, and he says "coach, I didn't get beat inside, I got beat outside!" Of course...how silly of me. Carry on with what you're doing then, young man... This season is really testing my sanity and patience. I've never been a coach to blame kids...I always think about what do I need to do differently. Do I need to teach our concepts differently, adjust our scheme to our kids, am I not motivating them? Are our drills not effective, is our practice time not crisp and effective, etc. But this year I'm just beating my head against the wall. As a teacher If my class isn't understanding a concept, then the problem's usually with me and how I'm teaching it. I just don't know what to do with these guys. 0-7 or not, I don't want to throw in the towel on the season, but I'm just at an absolute loss as to what to do.

Our own middle school team pulls that stuff. I went to a game a few weeks ago and they were winning 48-0 late in the game, running clock, and threw a touchdown on a play action pass. They play all their starters every game, all game, no matter how big they're winning. They're not officially affiliated with our HS program or school district, so other than voicing our concerns there's not much we can really do. It's maddening, especially since I teach a lot of these kids at school and I know they're learning a lot of bad habits from their coaches.

Most teams are more athletic than us, bigger up front etc. I'm not griping here, I just don't understand. 1995, first year I was teaching (3rd year coaching) and we started the season 9-0. We had thought at the beginning of the year we might be 6-5 if things bounced our way and we win the ones we should, that we would make the playoffs. We ended up 9-3, lost in the first round. By the time we got that 9th win, the only thing that we had left on our rabbit's foot was a toe nail. The kids, parents, community, etc thought it was the best thing ever. Given the 45 year history of the school, it was. Side note, since I left after the 1998 season this team has pretty much been the awful to average team it had always had been. However a coach came in about 5 years ago and won the big cookie last season.
