I take attendance every day during warm ups. It's a CYA thing so if parent has something to say, I can tell them in week 10 about an absence in preseason week 1.
Plus it helps me learn the new DB/former WR that I get every other week.

I tell all my students on the last day of class not to be offended if I see them in public and can't remember their names. I've actually had Former students approach me and say, "you don't remember my name do you?" Normally though if they are willing to come up to me I actually remember who they are.

I worked with a guy (teacher) that told kids if he didn't know their name after first two weeks of class he would give them a dollar if they caught it. He was pretty good with names.
I am terrible with names. For players I just ask them every time I address them until I know it. For students I hand back work personally so when I call their name I interact with them until I know their names. I usually can get them down in a couple of weeks when I have them but once they are gone I only remember the position they played or where they sat in class. I call all former students male or female "buddy" if I don't remember their names. Hey buddy how's it been going? Hey buddy great to see you. I don't know if they realize I forgot their name or not.

I thought every kid was named either hoss, chief, boss, dude, or buddy... no?

I call all the current and former players/students 'Babe'. I got it from my grandmother. She called all us grand kids 'Sugah Babe'. Or I call a call a former player 'Beau'. Every male in the South is either a Beau, a Bubba, or a Junior.

I just give them nicknames, then I know what to call them.
