What type of impact does the person at home have on your ability to be a good coach?
I'm fortunate that my wife has coached volleyball for nearly 20 years.
There are times when I know she would like me home more, but she rarely (if ever) expresses any frustration.
Over the years we have been able to read each other when we get into "grind mode" during our seasons. We've also helped each other in the areas of parent problems, advice on certain players, etc.
I'm not saying that a non-coaching wife is unable to provide support, but in my home it seems to help at bit.
Just curious to what others experience.

Girlfriend is a gymnast (think Cirque Du Soleil) and is an instructor at the studio she trains at. She gets it, for the most part. I think she likes that I have something that forces me to give her space.
I've dated girls that think me being a football coach is 'hot', but not many think that in-season.

Ha! I should be so lucky! What I do have is a wife that has her own community service activities and recognizes that my coaching is a community service activity, as well. Not exactly the same, but similar.

True story, I was coaching girls basketball and dated a woman who was a coach on another team in our league. Trading scouting reports were easy, and understanding each others schedules were easy as well. Playing each other was the hardest thing in the world! Both of us are hate to lose types, and it didn't work out in the long run, but we split 1-1 in the time we were together, after the game each time I went home alone, so theres that :/

Wife isn't a coach, but she is the assistant AD and PE teacher. I marked yes on the poll.

I have a friend whose wife gave him the 'me or football' ultimatum. At the time, they had only been married for like two years. Long story short, he chose football. He gave her the 'I was a coach when you met me' line and she worked through it, I guess.
They are still together, but it was a very tense time in their marriage.

I've heard from a lot of women that the football coach thing is hot. I cant decide if its from some fantasy they had as a high school girl, or if they love dudes with Under Armour clothing, with a gut and dips Skoal. If the latter is the case, Im like Channing Tatum to those girls.

nope, she's in the tech industry (developer).
But, luckily she's smart enough to "get why i do this" - and that there could be worse places i could go at night.....

My wife was a nurse (now retired). For years people thought she was a single parent because she went to all these fall functions (weddings, family birthday parties, etc) by herself with two small kids, but she never complained. A real trooper....

Seriously she is very supportive. I am also assistant AD and what she get frustrated at is when I gotta cover a basketball game on Friday night in February.

Why doesn't dcohio comment on threads like these?

But he's in a WIN-NOW situation at his new school. He's probably in "full grind" mode right now. We'll hear from him soon I'm sure...

My wife played collegiate softball, coached high school softball and basketball when she was finishing up her nursing degree. Now works full time as a nurse, I think she secretly wishes she could coach again. I've encouraged her to pursue it. I was coaching when we started dating so she understands the hours, commitment level, etc. She is extremely understanding and encouraging. She embraces being a coaches wife.

My wife coached for many, many years but is now retired from coaching. Not only does it help with her understanding my schedule, but she is a great sounding board for me, particularly with dealing with discipline type issues.

she is a great sounding board for me That is one area that I lean STRONGLY on my wife for when it come to ideas or bigger decisions. I'll know within about five seconds whether what I'm saying is a good or bad idea. She is really good at not only telling me, "you're freaking crazy if you do that," but also coming up with a lot of possible things that could go wrong, even when I go forward with a certain idea. I ran a 7 on 7 tournament a few years ago. She was very instrumental in that area. I would have fallen on my face without her insight. The tournament was a relative success and we ran it the next year even better. Having a sounding board is so vital.

Women...<rolling eyes> (still need that smiley Huey...just sayin) Of course women think it's hot. Because every girl, no matter what she says...EVERY girl wants to date a jock/athlete. Even those little crazy Emo girls...deep down in their heart, they want to date the QB. It's our society. And lets all be honest, if you read any psychological study on the laws of attraction, women are attracted to providers and protectors. That's why no girl is heart throbbing in HS over a golfer...and as a side note, no woman sleeps in peace and safety at night because her BF or husband does crossfit. Just sayin. I had a wife. It was ok. She was supportive while my son was in school but when he graduated she started fighting for her time and started placing obstacles in the path but was vocally supportive, just not in action. I wish I could say "I'd really like to find that special girl" but honestly, I don't really care. I mean, yea lets get a serious girlfriend and for her I am going to trade in: Golfing anytime I want, going anywhere at anytime with anyone and getting home whenever I get there. No one tells me I drink too much or stay up/out too late, my stuff is always where I put it. My house has looks like a man actually lives there, there are no flowers, or stupid chit on the walls, there aren't 37 pillows on my bed. I have money to go out to eat anytime I want. I drive a nice car. I can meet and bring home any female and she can spend the night (my ex-wife was a real stickler on random females spending the night, she was not supportive at all). So yea, yea I think I should find a great girl and settle down and trade all of that so I can argue with someone over the remote in the off season so I don't have to watch lifetime and take her out in week 5 because we haven't been out in a long time. Yea...sounds like a great idea...what am I, phuking stupid? There are women every where. The world isn't going to run out of them. But I only have so many football seasons left in me. I can always get a girl and you know what, if I don't find one...then phuk it, I will hit that retirement home like it's a singles club and I'm just looking for the Parkinson ward. While dc is running his new high octane offense, I am still running my wing t from the late 80's. But let me tell you, she, I mean it, is still as beautiful as ever. Trimmed the fat from the playbook, continues to workout in the weight room and condition, updated the passing game, included some gun, threw in some exotics and gimmicks, and we are super high octane scoring tons of points. Just think there might be a flaw with dcohio's plan, I mean offense. Just seems like it could be expensive to add in all those new plays. Sometimes it takes years, I mean weeks of practice and reps to get it to be a well lubed, I mean well oiled machine. See the thing is our team knows the wing t like the back of our hand which means we can even score touchdowns during the busy week, not just during the weekend. I can still get other things done, but know the offense is ready to roll on any night. Don't have to go out, or spend some money, or try and teach someone new that playbook. It means I can get work done, or go workout myself, or play basketball and know that we can still put together a 2 minute drive to score before bed, I mean before the game ends. Or we can just try and control the clock all game and go on long, deep time-consuming drives. My wing t is not only gorgeous, but is perfect with kids, loves football and other sports, and still supports me win or lose. I know I am lucky that I have found the perfect offense and everyone is not so fortunate. The wing t is money in the redzone and unstoppable on the goalline. The better you know the playbook and what plays to call, the more efficient you are running it. The spread might sound all sexy, but throwing that gun waggle touchdownown pass off an incredible buck sweep fake can be just as exciting. And trust me, the old-fashioned under center bucksweep for a 90 yard game winning touchdown is a thing of beauty.

Dc,
Love it!
But who has a better chance winning tonight? That guru with a new team and new offense and just a few weeks of practice or that guru that has been with the same team for 25 years and been running that same offense for years but adds in a few new gimmicks just when they least expect it?
Don't tell me you are one of those visor and flip-flop wearing, poster board play calling, got to get athletes in space offensive guys who only cares about running the latest offense and throws it all over the field where winning doesn't matter, only how many points you score. LOL
This has been a great and fun thread!

Ok first off if i were a visor and flip-flop wearing, poster board play calling guy, i would beat my own a$$ on general principle. And while the tried and true offense will win you a lot of games, i question if it will ever win you the top prize. But as I'm a defensive guy, not an offensive guy, we keep things pretty simple. You see keeping it simple keeps it fast. It's easier to learn and players operate on instinct rather than thought. It's pretty straight forward, every player knows exactly what i am when they pick me up, and them playing instinctually is always more fun. They still want to take me home and see if they can make me tried and true, but they can't and they really don't want that anyway, they just want to try. Funny story - we are new at this school obviously. I'm talking install with our OC and he's mapping out the install for our offense. This was during our 3 camp days in June. He said "how long does it take you guys to get everything installed?" i said "2 practices" he looked surprised and said "we had 2 practices yesterday" i said "yea, it's all installed, today we just repped it" he said "so you'll install more as the season goes?" i said "no, it's complete." I don't think he believed me. But we are still repping and getting better at what we do and our kids are really starting to play it very very fast. Teach me your ways
