The 5th World Cup of (tackle) American Football begins on Thursday in Canton, OH. It can be watched live, and looks like it will be archived. Here's the broadcasting list: www.americanfootballinternational.com/watch-the-2015-ifaf-world-championship-live/After some turbulent times over the past year, unfortunately the orginally planned 12 team event in Sweden has been forced to a 7 team tournament in the US.Anyways, to the football, it will feature USA, Japan, Mexico, France, Australia, South Korea, and Brazil. Nonetheless, it promises to be a nice spectacle and always good to see other nations around the globe putting squads together. Must be nice for the teams as well to get nice football facilities and get to spend time around the Hall of Fame,
Here's the schedule: ifafworldchampionship.org/schedule

Good games...sadly Brazil started really bad the game against France and was 24 x 0 by the end of first half. But they held their ground and finished the game losing 31 x 06.
other results:
Australia 47, South Korea 6 United States 30, Mexico 6

Both starting WRs and RB from France are really good. Defensive Line is very athletic too.
If you want to laught out loud, watch USA X Mexico and listen to the Japanese Referee calling the fouls...amusing!

i just like the idea that football is spreading to other countries - hopefully in the years to come, the competition across the board will be elevated - we will see some more teams come in (16 - 20?) and we will get some really good football going internationally - and hopefully they keep the sponsors and ESPN out of it. budweiser and ESPN ruined the NFL and starting to do the same to NCAA.

Football has been played here in the UK since 1984 iirc Our 3 tier senior league has over 60 teams And our 3 tier university league is the largest in Europe.... And it's been in some of the other euro mainstays as long It's def more popular now but Europe has been playing this sport for a long time..

Here in Brazil the Local ESPN is broadcasting the games online in the "Watch ESPN". No more than that. Sponsors? we wish... Some players of the Brazilian team didn't go to Canton because they didn't had the money to pay the trip (really expensive). And I don't even know how the ones that work are doing with their jobs...Probably some of them just quit.

ESPN ruined it by creating the "hit of the week" garbage we now have to live with - which led directly into the thuglife culture that the NFL has become. im hoping that the IFAF can be a pure substitute. get back to "playing the game because we love the game".

As a result, a bunch of teams that qualified were forced to withdraw simply because of expenses. In addition to the 7 here, we were supposed to have Canada (who withdrew due to player availability - weak imo), Germany, Austria, Sweden as hosts, and Morocco. Unfortunately I thinnk 12 would be the cap at the moment at least for the top level. Maybe someone would be willing to organize a 2nd tier tournament for the other teams so that they can get experience. African teams are untested unknowns, and consists of only Morocco and Egypt as far as I'm aware of. In Asia, Kuwait (lost 69-7 to South Korea) and Philippines (lost 86-0 Japan) entered the qualifiers but they are a ways off, other nations have competed in flag though like Vietnam, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia. South America has some teams that are playing like Brazil, Uruguay, Chile. In Central America, Panama and Costa Rica are at a pretty similar level while Nicaragua, Guatemala, and El Salvador are a big step down from that (as in 50-60+points). In Europe, a lot more teams are active but there is a noticeable gap between teams.

During the first game (Korea v. Australia), they were going over the expenses for players to get here. The Koreans (per player) had to come up with roughly $4,000, while Australian players had to pay $8,000 just to get here, plus get time off from work. If that's not love for the game, I don't know what is!

I was trying to watch the USA v Mexico game on my laptop in my hotel the other night. The internet was awful and it looked like I was watching a recording from the first ever video camera, but it made me happy watching football played in it's own WC format.
It would be amazing to see a big stage for the WC of REAL football be as big as it was for soccer, but I just feel like it will be later rather than soon. We can only hope that the sport grows all around.

Also, not trying to hijack this thread, but since the US recently won the World Cup, I believe that the rest of the world should be forced to call the sport Soccer (instead of futbol) for the next 4 years.

Yesterday's results:
Brazil 28-0 South Korea France 53-3 Australia USA 43-18 Japan
Wednesday's Schedule: Australia vs. Brazil, 12pm Japan vs. Mexico, 330pm USA vs. France, 7pm
Saturday's Schedule: 5th place - South Korea vs. Australia/Brazil winner, 12pm Bronze - Japan/Mexico loser vs. USA/France loser, 330pm Gold - Japan/Mexico winner vs. USA/France winner, 7pm
*How South Korea can lose twice and play for fifth is beyond me, sixth would be more appropraite to me. How fair is it either Brazil or Australia that they finish last (7th) by losing Wednesday despite defeating South Korea by sizeable margins? If anything, Wednesday's game should be the 5th place game, Saturday 6th place by virtue of losing.

France is very dangerous on special teams, they've been pulling long returns like nobody's business. If they can be consistent all around (not like the Brazil game where they switched off after the first quarter) it may be interesting. I'm still believing though that the US shouldn't have any problems, and I expect at least a three td romp. The Japan-Mexico game promises to be the most competitive of the tournament, and historically all of their games have been very close.
It's interesting to see how this tournament has played out, you can definitely see the styles and levels of competitiveness with the teams. The US is clearly top dog without question. Japan/Mexico are of the next tier with France possibly closing in. Australia and Brazil seem to be of similar levels while South Korea has struggled with their lack of size anywhere. It's most evident with the ground games of all these teams, it's either dominant or non existent.
Take South Korea for example. They've been running a 3-3 stack with tons of middle blitzes to try to stop the run. Australia averaged 6.9 per rush on them while Brazil averaged 6.8. The Korean ledger consists of -27 yards on 21 attempts vs. Australia and 52 yards on 20 carries. France against Australia averaged a video game like 8.6 per carry, 6.8 vs. Brazil. USA ran off 5.8 against Japan. Mexico (3-4 with both OLBs on line frequently if I recall correctly) held them to under 3 per carry though, and it showed with how long it took for the US to really click on offense.
I don't know if the lack of defense is to lack of scouting information, lack of time together, lack of skill/IQ, all the above, none of the above. But certainly offense has taken a front seat role.

USA x France will be fun to watch... USA has a good passing game and their RB #6 is very good. If they start slow like against Mexico they could be in trouble. France has a good front seven, but i didn't liked their defensive backs, USA could and will probably explore that. Like mdunham said, France is very good on special teams. I read about their coach that he was a Special teams coordinator in NFL Europe and a special teams assistant for the Cleveland Browns for a while. And their returner is a threat in every touch. South Korea lacks the size for sure, and they tried too much fancy stuff that didn't work. Japan showed very good techniques on defense. Good tacklers. But they just let USA pass the ball all day long (didn't liked their aproach on this, too much space in the secondary) Brazil has some good players...It gives us a great perspective at how we are evolving around here. Hope it makes more easy ways for us.

I think they should screw France over and run the veer with Steelman at QB. The guy did a pretty good job at Army during his 4 years there and I would love to see how teams would react.
Yeah the mesh and timing would look horrendous, especially how they play games every other day it seems like...however, I've seen worse from these other national teams alone!

I keep thinking about how fun it would be to see someone running wing-t or flexbone in this tournament. South Korea definitely would have been better off running one of these instead of the polecat

Many of these teams don't throw the ball well enough to stay in these spread formations. Line up in cover 0 and send the ranch against many of these teams, and they'd be sunk.

At least a technical report I have from 2013 says they ran wing-t. *Took me some time but found some '04 film of it. Looks like most out of red/blue. Lots of 20 series stuff, some option. Can't find any later film for the life of me. But not to hiijack this thread too much anyways...

But I agree some of it is starting to get stale.

On a small note, I wish the pdf box scores they provided wasn't the game html pdf printout from statcrew, and rather them print/scan the nicer looking game report prinouts. They'd look a whole lot more professional and cleaner, plus more printer friendly than just saving the html version as a pdf.
