For the first time in my teaching carrier I have gotten a summer job (so the wife can be at home with our kids), so I'm curious, does anyone else have a summer job and if it conflicts with football, how do you "keep in touch" with your guys?

I work at a golf course in the summer and I told them up front that I have lifting and practice throughout the summer so I basically come and go as I please. Its a pretty good gig. You could see if your employer would be willing to work with your schedule. Never hurts to ask

I've never had the full time summer job, but even so I don't live at the school. Stopping by for 10-15 minutes during a weight room work to check on your boys on regular basis can do a lot. There's social media. A phone call does wonders with the kids today. Have lunch/supper with coach can work. Just think of it as how you deal with your best friends times 20, and do the same things.

I'm not working it this summer, but I've worked summer school in the past. Around here it's half day and we lift in the afternoon so works out perfectly.

Early in my career I taught behind-the-wheel driver's ed (for the school) during the summer, and my wife was full-time mom. When she went back to work (after two kids), I stopped doing this because the money I was making simply paid for the babysitter. So my wife worked full-time during the summer and I became Mr. Mom.

It depends on what the football schedule is and if you have the power to change it. I know some teachers work construction because summer is the busy time for that, so if you do football in the evenings it works out pretty well. If you teach in certain fields you might be able to work in that field, I had a chemistry teacher who would calibrate condensing towers in the summer.

I've worked summer school for the past eight years. We go from 7am-2pm. I would then go home, power nap, eat, and head to the weight room for 5:30-7pm weight room M-TH.
I've also delivered newspapers for the Washington Post. I would be up at 4am, deliver until around 5:30, and drive directly from my route to school. There was never a conflict with weight training during those hours. But the early rise took it's toll after a year or so.
Another job I did was drivers ed. Good gig. I could set the hours and days I wanted to work. Moved to a different state, so that is no longer in play.
Keeping in touch mainly involves finding opportunities in your day that also doesn't take you away from your family for a great deal of time. Like others have said, social media, quick "just checking in" phone calls, and drive-by's can all make a difference.
Way to step up for the family though. I'm sure the wife appreciates being at home with the kids.

She definitely does shocktroop. She had taught special education for 6 years and these last couple were hard on her. When the daughter was born last fall I finally convinced her too let me get a summer gig so she could stay home. It'll be tight, but everyone I have talked to has told me (and her) that we won't regret it.
Unfortunately for me, I have essentially had to cut football workouts completely out. No summer school to teach, drivers ed is now done by private companies around here, and no construction in the area. So for me, I deliver ice. And yes, I suppose it is a "cool job." But, I start the day at 7 am and go until either the route is done or I'm out of ice, which because I'm over 21 and can drive over state line means that I done get home typically until well after 6 or 7 pm. In order to make enough to make ends meet, I work 4 days a week. We work out M, W, F at 8 am, so when I do get a day through the week off I go in, but that's one happens once or twice. Its definitely worth knowing that my wife will be at home with the kids.

Its definitely worth knowing that my wife will be at home with the kids. I delivered pizza for Domino's for a couple of summers. That wasn't bad. For the most part we got to make our own schedule and it wasn't very hard work (Mostly it consisted of driving my car and listening to the radio). It's mostly night work so you'd be able to make workouts and spend some time with your family. I do have to say that I did it a long time ago (They still had the 30 minute guarantee) so I don't know what it's like now. It also depends on what kind of neighborhood you'd be working in not just for safety reasons but also for tip potential.

I do not have a summer job. But a cool one I've heard of that I would definitely consider in the future would be a historical tour guide. I don't live in an area with any historical attractions, but as a history nerd that'd be a sweet summer gig. We have a family friend that was a teacher in San Diego and worked on the USS Midway giving tours during the summer. I would totally love to be like the dudes in Boston that dress up and give Revolutionary War tours or something like that.
Call me a dork, but I think it sure as heck beats other jobs some of my California friends have so they can scrape together their $1200 rent for their dingy studios and/or hippie communes. Such jobs include - Waiter - Customer Service for Healthcare.gov - Comic Book Store employee - Coffee "Barista" (Starbucks worker). x3

I don't work over summer I still get paid over summer Every year I tell myself to get a job at a gym I work out 1-2x a day at a gym anyway Spend my free time there since I have all day in the summer One of these days I'll do it But I also like being totally free I can go take off with the gf whenever I want Or take off and take kids to college camps whenever Seriously contemplating getting into the Instagram/YouTube fitness industry, put together meal plans and workouts for people Film myself doing lifts Sell people 12 week plans for $100 a pop (super cheap compared to most doing this ) And supplement my income that way B Dud fitness coming soon

You're about to be busy for the next 7 days! (grew up in the ice business) Oh, I've already heard the horror stories of being out on the road until 1 or 2 in the morning, multiple reloads, the whole bit. Yeah, its gonna suck, especially for me since I drive a lot to begin with.
Beer delivery guys are an interesting bunch. Saw a Budweiser semi literally park in a turn lane and drop his lift gate to make a delivery at a liquor store.

I do and I get whatever I want in terms of schedule, mainly because I don't need the job, and I will tell them where to stick it, which I have done multiple time already. Unfortunately for them I competent.

I'm not sure if this is in your power or not but have you considered having the team come in a 6 am? We did that at my last stop and I loved it!

Best way I ever have seen it done. Get started at 6 and end by around 7. Kids go to their jobs and we carry on with the day. We get things done around the school and field work and are done with the day by 1:30-2pm.

We do an elite group and development group (then a separate 9th grade). We tried letting the elite group take the later time slot in the morning, they preferred the first slot just for thos reasons.

He said 6am. Wow most kids would quit lifting and working out if we said 6 am. We have had groups that would but not most years.

Not in position to make that call. I'd be fine with it and that is what we do during the school year, but summer would probably be a harder sell.

Anther one I was considering was Uber. I live just south of DC. I was at an AVID conference in Dallas a couple weeks ago. Our Uber driver said he knew a guy with an SUV (charges more for more people) drove all day and made close to 40k in six months. He said they make 80% commission.
Don't know how true it is, but dang it if I didn't look into it. I could make a pretty penny in the DC area.

Uber is good for part time work. There are a few studies out there regarding the amount of money that people make over the course of a year. I'll try to find it and link it to you.

I thought about uber, but I feel there's too high a risk of getting shot/robbed/stabbed

Don't you live in hippie-land? What's the worst that happens, they try to pay you in bitcoin? Maybe they get mad at you for taking them to the wrong artisanal froyo shop?
