HA! the filter didn't sensor the word "asshat" #awesome the only reason I typed it. LOL. Jesus am I bored...last week of school, kids are scrambling trying to get make up work in, I've played over 20 games of spades on my phone already...no cell signal in my room...8 days until I move. We're done next week. I teach Spanish. All of my Spanish classes are doing video projects as their final. My day right now consists of me starting out the class with instructions. Pretty much "do work" then I have nothing to do. I am bored out of my mind and growing hostile. Probably won't be returning to this school either. Heading back to the midwest as soon as I find a job.

Most annoying things I have seen in 7v7s:
1. Offensive guy who puts the ball in the middle of the field every play in 7on7. Hey buddy I know that makes all your 2 X 2 spread plays look nice and spaced perfectly but the ball is almost never in the middle of the field in HS.
2. 2 X 2 spread guy who runs double smash and runs his fastest player (usually a wideout he has subbed in just for this purpose) right up the middle of the field against 2 shell coverage.
3. This is the absolute worst, 2 platoon hurry up spread guy who has his offense lined up while his defense is defending our offense. The second we stop them or score he runs a play. This guy also had the crumpled 3 X 5 note sheet a la mike leach. ok buddy.

As much as I dislike tournaments I wouldn't say that they're completely useless. It does get the kids competing and defensively they get the kids used to communicating and playing the coverages under duress. The problem is that the juices do get flowing and sometimes winning becomes important and I don't like that much. I prefer "friendlies" against one other team. We've had two of them so far with a team whose coaches are friends of ours. We;ve run nothing but C.4 every snap and it's been very useful. absolutely. I'm like that with scrimmages also. Because we've had some "issues" in scrimmages as well. I hate 7 on 7 tournaments. I would 10 times over rather 7 on 7 vs someone I know, who I know their kids are well coached, who will line stuff back up and answer questions as I will for him. Because in July it's about getting better for the season, not winning. It's really practice and a learning time. Scrimmage wise - just run your chit. If you blitz a lot, then blitz. Just do what you do. But do NOT say "do whatever you want coach" and then b!tch when I do. It's not my fault your Oline is undisciplined and a walked up MIKE backer cuts the WILL backer loose through B gap...that's what we do asshat and we do it quite a bit. Just watch a game and you'd see that. I don't know how things are there but one thing that drives me crazy is the recent overemphasis that fans put on scrimmages. T0 us they're just glorified practices but to some they keep score and act like the results really mean something. It's not just fans either. When we had our first undefeated season the coach of a team that we scrimmaged said in the paper that we weren't really undefeated because they'd beaten us in a scrimmage. He said that he was joking but, yeah, whatever. On the state HS Rivals board some fans are biotching that some schools (like us) don't list scrimmages when they release their schedule. Yeah, we don't list our morning 2-a-days either.

if you read the Texas 7 on 7 rules, bump cover and all contact by the defense is illegal. www.scribd.com/doc/255220530/2015-Official-Texas-State-7on7-RulesG. Responsibility to avoid contact is with the defense. There will be NO chucking. Deliberate bumping or grabbing. These actions will result in a “tack on” penalty at the end of the play (5 yard penalty) State 7on7 rules?... that is a lot right there....

I was accused of stealing the offense's plays and telling my defense because I like to coach my linebackers from behind the offense. I just stood back there so that I could watch their eyes to make sure they were looking at what I wanted them looking at. I saw a tight split by #2 so I pointed to him and made an out movement with my hand for my OLB and he gave me a head nod and picked off an arrow route. "He's cheating! He's relaying our plays!" Every damn defensive coach/player in the world knows that a tight split should alert an out breaking route or crack and a wide split should alert an in breaking route. Visor jockeys. I get SOOOOO many dirty looks for standing behind the opposing offense during 7 on 7. I once had a coach refuse to run a play until I was a good 10 yards away from their huddle, which cracked me up. I do this in all 7on7 and for good reason: 1 - being an old offensive guy I like to watch from that perspective 2 - I do not like to see 45 coaches back there helping cloud the coverage... drives me nuts... 3 - as previously stated - I like to see where their eyes are That being said, in my son's 5th grade flag championship game, a mom came down from the stands and accused me of cheating and was yelling/cursing at me for being near their huddle... was classic... and we lost... on the last play... on a hail mary... it is flag, but it hurt....

In another post here I stated how I stand behind the offense when we are on defense... so what I do is stand in between the QB and C while we get lined up.... I will also spot the ball for them and put in on the hash....

My personal favorite is when it's 4th and goal at the one and they line up a "back" next to an under center QB, have him take two steps forward and turn around.

Last year we had opposing ball carriers in 2 different games get flagged for illegal contact because they lowered their head and trucked our FS and LB. I'm probably not long for this game. That should get called on ball carriers more often!

Just to stir things up a bit... Could we get MORE defensive coaches on the field for 7 on 7??!!?? It's just great to have the DC, the LB coach, the 2 DB coaches, the middle school DC learning the system all STANDING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FIELD 5 yards beyond the safeties JUST LIKE THEY DO ON FRIDAY NIGHTS!! Really helpful for young QBs to see 7 kids and 6 adults in ball caps with their bellies hanging out to teach him about reads. (Y'all look like the most unathletic bunch of ***** trying to "run", if that's what you want to call it, out of the way when the ball comes at you). Why can't you guys coach from the sidelines?? Is that unpossible?? Stand behind the offense?? Stand behind the defense?? How about stand on the sidelines until the HSL allows you to stand on the field on game days. You want to see their eyes? One of the best DCs I've ever met always commented on where our teams eyes were during a play. Something he noticed from standing on the sidelines watching our teams play. If you can't see their eyes from the sidelines you need glasses. How do you know where their eyes are during games? Better yet, just stand on the numbers like you do during the game! Never met a DC yet that could stay in the box.
7 on 7 is NOT football. It's competition.
I think my work here is done. First round's on me if we ever do meet up at a clinic. I'll be the one in the visor.
Discus...
btw What are the dates for the Brazil clinic???

I used to stand behind the defense but realized that: A. I really couldn't see anything from there; and B. I was getting too old to duck. If somebody accuses me of listening to their plays I'll laugh and tell the truth: I don't even know OUR pass patterns. As for coaching 7 on 7 from the sidelines, not happening. If you want to consider it competition, feel free. I consider it practice.

fantom Just come stand next to me. We can talk during the plays. Just don't stand on the field. Practice. Competition. Either way, It's not football. It's just something to do in the summer time that resembles football. Just do what you do on Friday night is all I'm saying. I would be willing to bet you want to get your guys off the field on 3rd down though. Or get a pick! Nothing wrong with teaching guys to compete. Oh right, it's just practice. There's also the guy that wants to put 8 on the field for 7 on 7. Forgot about him. Why not put all 11? Maybe 12 or 13 if that helps.

If you're on the sidelines I won't be standing next to you unless the rules say that we have to stand on the sidelines. I guess we have different philosophies about 7 on 7. That's fine. If you care about winning 7 on 7, knock yourself out. All that I care about is making us better for when the games count. I feel that I can do that better from the field given the fact that we have very limited time to practice defense during the offseason. If you don't like it, well then don't like it but if the rules allow, I'll be on the field.

Gripes about offense at 7 on 7 (The ones mentioned previously I completely agree with) 4. Holding up every play on card for your offense to run 5. Throwing the ball to the crosser that just crossed in front of (or behind) your center. 6. Not bringing a Center.
Gripes about defense at 7 on 7 (not covered in previous post) 1. Playing your LBs at 9 yards and dropping on the cadence.
