I don't have a team, but I voted "yes" for on field achievement because that is what the last school I worked with did. I hated it.

We use to and it was a distraction and a pain in the A$$. Head Coach made it very subjective and the kids knew it. The only kids that worried about them were the kids that dnot play.

We do it. Much to my displeasure b/c it becomes the only decal on our helmet (we look like Ohio State-VOMIT). Anyhow, have done it both ways (with and w/out helmet stickers) and it can be a pain if you let it. The kids seem to like it, so we keep doing it.

Too much maintenance and tracking for us.

Don't do it here... when I was a HC, it was all team based stuff:
Everyone who played on offense got sticker if we met certain criteria on offense, same on defense and each special teams.

My current school does it a couple of different ways. We have "badges" that go across the back of the helmets for off the field stuff, each category has its own badge. The back of our helmets end up looking like the front of a military dress uniform. We then also give more traditional helmet stickers for PHDs (Pride, Hustle Desire) which is our practice players of the day and then for meeting unit goals on Friday nights.

We did this at two different schools I've coached at. In hindsight (at the first one), I don't think we gave out enough for off the field accomplishments so only a handful of our "stars" really had helmets with stickers on them. At the second school, the head coach wanted us to give out a ton of them because he wanted the kids to be excited about them, but he only allowed them to be given out after wins. We were in the first year of a very "down" program so we only gave them out for two games that year.
I want to do them again because kids seem to like it, but I'm worried that only a few will get a lot of them and some of those few will see it as an ego stroke to an already inflamed ego. Thoughts?

Thoughts--- very little if anything at all happens on a football field in a vacuum and if you reward "everyone" for accomplishments (I have seen various methods where many/all players on offense/defense get a sticker when X happens) then aren't you just decorating a helmet.

We have been the last 4 years. I agree it is a pain sometimes. Especially hate when you have that kid that wants to nit-pick about stats and just lets you know its all about him and his accomplishments. The reason we have kept doing it is because kids seem to like it. I like the idea I saw suggested in another thread similar to this and that would be to give stickers of the opponents mascot after wins. You could do that right after the game in the lockeroom which could make it mean more. Also, it rewards the only stat that we know really counts and that's winning.

coachd5085To some extent you are... but if it gets the kids excited to decorate their helmets, it is setup to be a team-1st system rather than an individual-based system, and the criteria fit your "if we do this we win" goals, I don't see any harm in it. I was against them for years, arguing that if we are any good, our MLB, QB, and TB should have their helmets completely covered because they are gonna be doing just about everything, so why single those kids out again... but decided to try them and use it as a motivator for kids to actively try to meet our team goals for each team (O, D, and the 6 ST units). We had kids starting to throw that block to get the RB an extra 2-3 yards on a carry because they knew that 10 or 15 of those plays where we get 2-3 more yards could equal 50 additional yards of total offense in the game and other little things that normally they would not do. It is a PITA to track and chart everyone who plays in the game on a particular special team or you get a young kid who only gets in during mop-up duty who will only have a few stickers while a 2-way starter will have a ton of them. If I get another head job, I may decide to use them again, but I may set it up to where there are no helmet stickers awarded unless we win the game because that is the #1 goal for ALL phases of the game. No real right/wrong answer... some guys want to reward their best players and use them as individual awards, some don't use them for that same reason... some guys want to use them as team only to reward team accomplishments, some don't use them because then it seems like decorations. All 4 reasons are valid and it is up to the coach. I know that if you are going to use them, I would not want to put in the work to track, chart, and handout the things unless I felt they were helping us win games.

It can be a pain but I never minded it. Always did it as team/unit awards and individual awards, never did them after a loss.

Previous coach did it and I was assigned to give them out but wasn't given strict criteria. I put it on the kids and asked them how many they think they earned. I really didn't care how many I gave out. They were dumb.

I could really careless about it either way. We give out a ton, but only after victories. We give a mix of individual and group/team awards.
I'm not sure of all the offensive stickers, but i know they give out TD and yardage stickers. They also give out things like no sacks for the OL, pancake/knock down blocks. They get something for not having any loss yardage plays, and so on.
Defensively we give out for tackle points (1 for every 15 points) sacks forced fumble INT recovered funble D TD Big hit Big play

We did forever but quit last year and it eliminated a lot of BS. Explained to the kids that every good play is really a group effort and the epitome of a great group effort is a win. The kids bought it and I'll never look back. Waste of time IMO

We do. Kids love it. It is objective and based on performance.
Some are individually based, most are team based. Everyone gets one for a win. Big stops on defense (red zone) get one. Scoring 30 as a team gets one. Perfect extra points/FGs get one. Pinning inside the 20 on kickoff gets one, etc.
Performance wise: 100 yards rushing, receiving gets one TD gets one Forced or recover TD gets one.
Our local paper awards helmet stickers each week in the Monday write up and we give the kids those as well.
When done right it's great. Sure your bet players get the most, but it's the guy that rarely gets one that makes it good in my opinion. A sophomore backup got a hammer sticker for a big hit and it was a good motivator for him. At the end of the day if the kids like them and they're not a distraction, it's great.

When we did it, it was great. It was a lot different than most teams. It was team based but a lot of special team stuff was involved too. I have posted on here a couple of times our list. Nothing better then my 115 pound safety coming off the field after punt return with his hand on the side of his helmet going "sticker baby" after a big peel back block. It was infectious. The kids had to get on hudl and send the clip of them doing the play by Monday too to get the sticker when it was individual stuff.

Our helmets are one color with a stripe down the middle and the player's number on one side of the helmet. We do nothing that would make one player stand out from all the rest.

We did it for the first time this year. It was a pain because I had to go and look at all the criteria to see if we met them. Only took about 15 minutes but it was one more thing on my plate. Kids loved it. The only individual awards given were for grades, weightroom attendance in the off season and the scout players of the week. We had several criteria for offense, defense and all of the special teams. Our PAT/FG block earned at least 7 this year. They loved collecting those stickers and those were the ones I loved giving out.

We only put on stickers if we won. Rooster Good plan. Just Curious, if you are going to award stickers, why would you give them only after a win? IMO if they earned them, they earned them...for instance, one of my big things is to block an extra point . It shows me the kids never gave after something bad has happened. I don't care if I am losing 48-0 and they block the 49th point. I would give that unit a sticker..BTW all our stickers are team based and pretty hard to get win or lose

Rooster We always hand out our stickers at our thursday meal before the next game..maybe that takes some of the emotion out of it..that being said, there were a couple of kids that did not put their stickers on their helmets win or lose which I thought was weird. one of the kids was our best defensive player, I asked him about it and he kind of brushed me off (not in a bad way(. I didn't make a deal out of it
