I think this is something schools should look at. How many more kids might come out for sports in general if they felt good about themselves.

Why do they always have their shirts off? If you're working as hard as they are and looking like they are... Why not?!?!?

Not that I'm the skeptical type but if that's what the average HS kid looked like in 1963 things really went to crap by the time I started HS in 1967.

That was pretty awesome when the Nazis tried it in Germany.
Seriously, there is no way, in our country today, to institute a project of that nature. None. Heck, you can't even make a kid dress for PE in today's educational climate. How you getting them to do that?
Kennedy's image as a "vigorous" president is really funny IMO. I wonder what painkillers he was on to film those spots?

I don't want this to get sideways, but having girls in PE classes kills this...unless they want everyone to kick ass in the class.
What are other reasons it couldn't work? Do you think parents would go ape s@#t because Johnny had to do a million burpies and hold a push up for longer than 1 second?

First of all I'm not sure how representative of the average HS PE class this is. At mine, a small school with no gym, our PE classes were only first and 4th quarters of the school year (We had Health during Winter). PE classes consisted of jogging a couple of laps, doing some cals, then playing basketball, touch football, or dodgeball of something like that.

I ended up doing a bit of homework into their program that they had going, at least in terms of the structuring of classes, standards for different levels of achievement (color shorts they're wearing = different levels), it was super interesting.
That said, I dunno about the feasibility of implementing this in frosh PE. This class was going on a full 20 years before I was born, but I just don't see 50 freshmen boys going along with this to the same degree those fellas are there. Hell, we have boys who are afraid to change in the open (they go into the bathroom stalls to change), much less go shirtless.

That's because they don't look like those guys. Imagine if that was standard practice? Really. I think all your sports teams would be loaded with kids trying out.
And you wouldn't have to argue with the baseball coach regarding lifting...because the whole school has buy in.

As I mentioned earlier, I think the culture just does not make room for it. You have to have adults who do not have a stomach for it. You are asking parents to actually parent their kids. Not be their buddy. Education does not have the stomach for it either. The P.E teacher would be fired the first time a lawsuit was threatened. I hope I am wrong.

Frankly, your comment on females in the class is both sexist, offensive, stupid and false. Girls being in PE has ZERO to do with why this generation is obese and PE has become what it has become. ZERO. To think that integrating PE is what has led us down the path we are on right now is both false and honestly makes you sound like a gigantic idiot. There is no way to institute something like this in PE, because it's a free country. Just because you think it's a good idea, doesn't mean that Jimmy's parents or Jimmy himself want to partake in it. And if you "require" it, you're circumventing the very foundation of what this country is founded on. Just like free speech in that you have the right to exercise and do whatever you please, so does someone who doesn't want to exercise. People are lazy and more and more are choosing to do nothing. It is not your jihad to change that, and it certainly shouldn't be our educational system. That's fascist thinking.

It is not your jihad to change that, and it certainly shouldn't be our educational system. That's fascist thinking. Amen! Couldn't have summed it up better myself. And speaking of females on PE: I can't tell you how many girls I have in my class that kill it and give full effort on days we do a running assessment or on days we are in the weight room. If I could get even half of my boys to work as hard as some of these girls and have the same mentality as them, I guarantee that I would have the best team in the state! I would definitely let these girls play football if they really wanted to. They might not know as much, but I know that if I told them that they needed to jump off a building, do a backflip, and run through a wall while blindfolded, they would do it (but probably will think I'm crazy if they already haven't figured that out). The problem with kids is that they are LAZY and SPOILED! If I didn't do my chores as a kid or got my school work done, I got my butt WHOOPED! If you scold a kid for doing something wrong, the teacher gets in trouble and not the kid....I know that if the teacher sent an email home, it was definitely because I messed up. If you spare the rod, you will make your child ROTTEN! I know I'm not perfect by any means, but getting humbled by my parents and getting punished when I needed to helped me become mature and realize what is right and what is wrong. It's ridiculous the direction our society is going and how a bunch of kids want to do the bare minimum. Most kids now a days are too worried about their "Instagram-selfie-twitter-ma-bookface-thingy" to care about growing up. PS: I'm not an old geezer by any means. Still in my 20's (for now) and just stating how much change has happened since I was in grade school...sorry for the venting.

Guys...I re-read my girls post. I totally sound like a jackass there. What I meant to say...is that it might be more difficult...in the teaching setting having both girls and boys in the same class. Not too long again there was boys PE and girls PE. I think it would be a lot easier to teach something like this model if the classes were separated.
I didn't mean to say girls couldn't do it. Sorry to sound so stupid there.

I don't remember saying that Larry. Again...the original "girls" post was meant to be about splitting the classes up and doing this separately.
And the true original post is about kids coming out for sports if they feel they are in better physical condition to participate.
Not sure where the "lazy" part is coming from...but whatever.

guys... the reason numbers are down is the same reason any PE revolution will never take place. Kids are allowed to be lazy by their parents. you're in the middle of the friend generation of parents who never want to be the bad guy. a lot of this is brought on by the relatively new explosion of the single parent home. Mom or dad, usually mom, doesn't ever want to be the bad guy for any reason, so the kid never hears the word no. it's all tied together.

How am I the "expert"? Then you tell me how is this going to work in today's world? What are you going to do when a kid would rather fail than dress for PE? How is this program fixing that? What are you going to do when you decide this is what we're doing and a kid says "No. I am not"? How are you going to deal with the first parent's complaints about the program and your admins immediately tucking tail and trying to avoid a lawsuit or some sort of trouble? How do you ever see instituting a program like this, when bare minimum physical education programs are both unsuccessful and viewed as unnecessary in today's educational climate?

"I think this is something schools should look at" is all I said. I don't have the answer. I'm not trying to solve the riddle. I asked a question about having this kind of fitness and the possibility of more kids coming out for sports. Maybe your awesome...well thought out questions could be answered by somebody.
My point directly at you is...don't put words into what I say. I never said lazy.
You can "win" by posting something clever and win the day.

Not trying to win anything.
Contrary to what you probably think, I'd love to see PE become something to actually get people in shape. That just isn't happening in today's education and I think it's foolish and a waste of time to think that it isn't. PE isn't the problem. It's a symptom of a larger problem. Until you fix that problem, you can want to do whatever you want with PE but it won't have any effect whatsoever.
