How many coaches do you guys have on the varsity (HS) level? What's ideal?
Is it worth hiring someone to fill a position or have fewer coaches but with good chemistry?

chemistry is important among a staff for sure, as it is contagious both good and bad with the team i guess teh simple answer is, find someone that fits in to fill the spot?

cre44,
I coach at a jr. college and we have 11 coaches on staff, all hard workers and we have great chemistry as a staff. It is important to have a staff that gets along because you spend so much time together. When I coached at the HS level we had 22 coaches for all three levels and had some problems because of egos. I would hire a coach that is a teacher of the game. I believe a coach has to be a teacher of the game as well as someone who will take the responsibility for his players and give them every chance and tool to develop and reach their full potential. If you hire a new coach make sure they have the same work ethic as your current staff and can get along with other staff members. Address the need for another coach, will it take pressure of other members of the staff, will it give you a better chance to win etc.. Good luck.

yeah, we just haven't found anyone yet and it's getting pretty late in the year. Looks like we may not find the right person. The HC (my father) interviewed a few people but he didn't get a good feeling from them. So you feel that going with few coaches and keeping the chemistry in tact instead of hiring someone who may not be a good fit (or taking a risk that he may not be)...

we have 6 varsity coaches. everybody coaches both sides of the ball, except the hc, who only coaches qbs. practice is fast and furious and it really makes you focus on the one thing that is important to get across that day.

We have 5 (including me) FB coaches and we all coach both sides of the ball. 3 of the coaches will also coach our JH FB team. I help with them when I can. The other coach is also our HS Principal (my DC) and I don't ask him to coach more than the Varsity. We also have 3 female coaches that coach various sports. As far as chemistry, it's probably the best staff I've ever had the pleasure of working with. Not to mention, our administration is super. For being an AD, I have a pretty stress-free situation.
