We have a Bye week one for the next two years (not by design). Anyone ever experienced that? How did you use that bye week? Did you feel like it put you in any type of disadvantage?
Any other comments or insights welcomed.
Just trying to get an idea of how to prepare for it.

We had no preseason game this year and week 1 went very poorly. If we had to do it again I think we'd have a much more formalized scrimmage at some point during training camp.

If your opening opponent is playing you won't be guessing when you game plan for them.

Here In the uk the way the schedule falls some team can and have played 2-3 games before another team even starts..
Can be seen as an advantage both ways... ( fresh legs v rust knocked off battle ready )
It's how you prepare if your a late start team.. Get a friendly game in some where etc

We do have a benefit game for our second scrimmage, which plays as close to a real game as possible with live special teams, down and distance, etc.

Do you have to take the bye (built into state rules) or can you fill it?

We are allowed to play a max of 10 games and have 10 games scheduled already.

We have had a bye the first week the past two years. It has worked out pretty well for us. In the past we have really struggled with practice attendance and interest during the bye weeks - we are a lower socio economic school and struggle in general with commitment. IF you are in this situation it is a no brainer.
Advantages: Having a bye first week allows you a little more time to install/practice special teams. We don't feel as pressed for time during camp and use this week to really emphasize it. Major advantage scouting. Your coaches get to see the teams early on your schedule live and in person. We were able to schedule a joint practice with a team that played in a showcase (check to see if this is legal in your section). This essentially gave us two scrimmages.
Major Disadvantage: Our kids have played poorly in the first half against teams that have had a full game under their belt. It takes them a while to adjust.
One more and this is personal (I didn't hear other coaches mention it), playing 10 or more straight weeks is a grind from a film study and prep standpoint.
