We are very fortunate to be practicing on Thanksgiving this year. Do any of you guys do anything special on that practice? If so, I'd love to hear what you do.

What a great problem to have, congrats. Never had that practice but I would make sure to enjoy it. Best of luck.

Always had it about 9 or 10 in the morning to try not to interfere with people's meals. Usually a few more dads around since they aren't off work. Other than that nothing special.

We always practiced about 9 or 10. Letting the boys hunt if they wanted to and not sleep all day. There will be others there watching practice like they said.

Practice in the AM. 9-11am sounds about right. We have the parents put together a breakfast for the kids. Biscuits and gravy is pretty easy to do and the kids like it. I think we had a mix of stuff another year when the parents brought in some fruit, pastries, etc.

We are having them in at 930 for a quick lift and then on the field immediately after. It is just our walk through day so we will probably have them all home by 11 or 11:30. This is my first time practicing on Thanksgiving so I am VERY thankful for it.

We come in about 8:30, go to about 10:15. Like others have said, there will be more family members around than usual, and we usually have some parents serving some scrambled eggs or something to the kids afterwards. Biggest thing to me is that I always want to stress to the kids that there aren't many teams still practicing on Thanksgiving, enjoy that you've had the kind of season that lets you be one of those teams.

I'm fortunate enough to have had several of these. We usually start at 9 and do our usual Thursday walk through/special teams run down. We try to keep it short and as normal as possible. We will have a couple of upper classmen/coaches talk about what they are thankful for and try to keep it about team unity. We try to make the playoffs just another practice week no matter what: I.E. a Monday is a Monday, etc....., but it it nice to step back a bit since you're one of only 4 teams left playing in your classification and be frank about where you are in the scope of the season.
The biggest thing that makes this special for me is that the coaches always open their doors for other coaches that might not have family in town and can't travel to see their real family, so we make it a 'coaching family' gathering. We also try and do the same for kids in need. We have brought kids into our homes and/or bought the groceries for their family if they are in need.
Down south family meal gatherings are an extra special thing that has a great meaning to everyone. To open your door to someone and break bread is an expression of love and community. If you eat together then you're family. There nothing wrong with making Thanksgiving practice an opportunity to reinforce the team/family thing.

We've been fortunate to practice every year of our program's existence on Thanksgiving. Not because we're good... we're Canadian and our Thanksgiving is in October.
We order about 12 buckets of chicken on Thanksgiving from KFC, the tradition started a couple years ago.
