I had a question but some background first. I am a second year head coach at a complete program rebuild. We do not have a very good record and that means in our area support is low. For the two years I have been at the school I have been approached by community people who tell me they have heard I am leaving and ask if it is true... I want to know if this has been common for other coaches out there or is it just wishful thinking by the community? The other places I have coached this has only been an issue when coaches our successful and the community is worried they are getting recruited away to greener pastures.
Not really sure why I wonder about this but I just get annoyed by this especially if it is not a common things that happens other places.

How would I end this?
I would start answering with something like: "I am not leaving until we win state."
Do that enough, and soon when people start talking about it, someone will repeat what you've said.

I have always said since the first day I got there that at the end of the season I sit down with the administration and go over the direction of the program and as long as they support that direction then I will be there but if they do not support that direction then that is my sign that I haven't done my job and I need to move on. Just want to know if this happens to other people or just in this area?

This is why you are getting this issue.
Your response sounds cryptic and open ended, which makes people think you are hiding something.
It also sets up some contention between you and the administration.
So they get this answer from you, to whom do you think this follow up then goes?
Your administration.
By the time it gets there, how much have they warped your words?
fantom
This is more a pragmatic mechanism than a statement of truth.
It is very hard to convolute or misinterpret that statement.
Is it possible he leaves before they win state? Absolutely.
Does that necessarily make him a liar?
In the strictest sense, yes.
In the real world, no.
I assume there will be a wide range of opinions on my take here. I do not wish to hijack this thread with "when is a lie and LIE" conversations.
So please don't do that.

What dc said.
I'm retired teacher, don't live in community where I coach, so I get asked this every year.
My first response is, "Why? Do you know something I don't?"
Except this year it will be true.

That makes sense didn't really think about it like you put it. Administration has a bad reputation with coaches is why I give that answer.

So I avoid any ounce of ambiguity.
I guarantee the administration will appreciate you clarifying the situation, and that will go a long way towards build a better relationship with them.
And, behind the scenes, keep updating that resume.

I got this question a lot until I moved here. People just kind of assumed since I didn't live in town that I was here to win and move on. Since I moved to town I haven't been asked that once.

I'm getting it right now. We moved to a larger, urban area that has a multiple state championship football program 0.5 mi from my house. I drive 25 min to work every day. I get asked a couple times a month if I'm leaving. I just laugh it off and say I'm focused on ____ (whoever we're playing this week) and that's it.
