Hey folks, tomorrow we are beginning our preseason practice for our modified football program (7th-9th grade), and I had a question for more experienced coaches regarding the correlation between how your kids did at this level and how their varsity records turned out. Last year we had a group that I regard as the most talented group of kids we have had together at that level, but somehow they ended up 1-6. It absolutely stuns me to this day that this happened, because I still regard that as having been a very talented team. Could it have been that they just weren't ready or not executing, or does this reflect on their long term potential? Thanks a ton in advance!

Does your modified program feed directly into ONE HS program?
We feed multiple HS programs and the HS Staffs that have their house in order....win more than they lose.

Yes, we are a central school district, so the peewee to the modified to the varsity is all for one school!

No, There's way too many variables for it to be any sort of reliable indicator of future success.

one of our players at a former school got cut in 7th grade. Hes now projected as a 1st round draft pick. wouldnt put too much stock in the lower levels success. I remember another guy too who was unreal in middle school. couldnt touch him at RB. When he got to the high school he was just a pretty good player when he was a senior.

Sometimes it can, sometimes it can't.
The school I work at now had a 7th and 8th grade team that went undefeated between 2007-2008. These kids were going to be the "saviors" of the high school sports program. However, by 2012, the top two kids in that class had transferred to another school and almost all of the rest of those kids had quit football for one reason or another. By 2012, when those kids were seniors, the football team went 0-9 and barely had enough kids to field a team. On the other hand, there is another high school around here that won a state title in 2001. Those seniors won EVERYTHING between 5th grade and their senior year. They were that good.
Too many variables...kids quit, get jobs and girlfriends, sometimes you get kids who mature early in junior high and are dominant because of that. Point is, a lot of things will change between junior high and high school.

I think you'd rather take your chances on varsity success with a team that was pretty good in junior high vs. one that wasn't. However, there are a lot of factors involved when making the transition to varsity. If your team remains the same from junior high to varsity and the competition they beat remains the same, then in that situation it tends to be pretty indicative of success in my experience. But if your competition is in a better position to pick kids up or you had stud RB who was shaving and driving himself to school in junior high and maybe his peers caught up to him later on (or maybe he just went down the wrong path somewhere along the way and was never the same again) then you probably won't do as well.
