We have a 4 way scrimmage one week prior to our first game. My question is do any of you use your headsets during the scrimmage?
I'm thinking about using mine with our booth guy talking to me about game situations like down and distance, formation advantages. My thought is this is one week prior to first game, shouldn't it be just like our game? We would also all be on sideline, subbing in from there and calling plays from sideline too. The booth guy also needs to get ready for the season and to knock the rust off as well. What better way to prepare.
In past, and everywhere else I have ever seen, there is no headset use, and play calling is all about seeing your guys blocking certain plays, and still doing some coaching in-between plays. There is plenty of merit to this as well.
Let me know your experiences and thoughts about this.

We have 3 scrimmages we treat the first two essentially as practice and treat the 3rd one more like a game so we'll use headsets for that one.

I've never seen headsets used during scrimmages. But I could see how they would help prepare the staff for the first game.

We don't use our headsets for our first scrimmage but we will for our second. We try and treat the second as much like as a game as we can.

We have three scrimmages; the last one is game conditions. We use the headsets for the first half of that scrimmage. Usually the starters do not play the second half; the seconds (and others) do. And as is the case at many places, we have to be on the field to make sure these guys know what to do.

For scrimmages, we do not use headsets. Usually because its on a practice field and there aren't always press box to be up in to make it work. So for the 2-3 scrimmages we'll just be on the sideline.
When our jamborees come around, then those are usually run more like mini-games set up at a stadium large enough to handle the 6-8 teams and fans, so we use the headsets then.
Besides the already stated chance to see how the headsets work, this is a good time to work out how each coach is expected to perform on a real game. If you have a new crew, then you might even want to use them every chance you get. The only thing worse than the headsets not working is having a coach on the other end that 'doesn't speak the same lingo' yammering on a set that is coming in crystal clear.

We only have 1 scrimmage before our first game also. We split the scrimmage into 2 halves. 1 half we treat as a practice situation.... the "controlled" part. We are on the field coaching between plays and running a predetermined script. The 2nd Half is "Game". We play it with a running clock for 2 quarters. All subbing is done from the sideline and we pull the headsets out. Gets kids in game mode, but almost important it allows us coaches to practice game situations.

Or you could always scrimmage during practice on the game field and use your headsets than. I've heard of a couple teams that do that.

We only scrimmage ourselves and we use the headsets mostly just to make sure they are working. I would suggest using them. A few years ago we chose not to use them at the scrimmage and they didn't work for the first game of the season so we had to order new ones, didn't get them until week 3.

We use them every year. We try to simulate a game as much as possible.

No, on offense, we script all plays in a scrimmage no matter what. We do this to make sure we run and pass: 50% right/left 50% wide/short 50% strong/weak
Opposing coaches have commented that they can't get any tendancies from it. Drives them crazy.

We bust out the headsets on scrimmages. There is rarely any useful information used or relayed, but its merely to run them through a game and make sure there aren't any unforeseen issues with them.

We do.
We try to use our one scrimmage we're allowed as a trial period for our first game. All issues should be hammered out prior to an actual game.

If its this only scrimmage you have, then do it and dont worry about it. We have a scrimmage and then a jamboree (around here that means game situation for a half). So we dont use them in the scrimmage-we are on the field coaching-but do during the jamboree.
