Colin Cowherd was talking about this on his radio show a few months back ... and his observation over the years is that the happiest people that he has worked with are those individuals that are obsessed (passionate) about their work and are extremely driven to succeed. Ideally we would all lead balanced lives, but rarely is that the case .... and as many have mentioned above, there are a lot worse obsessions in the world than football. So I say lose the guilt and embrace the fact we have all found something that we are passionate about and keeps us all excited about getting up each and every morning!

One of my good friends is obsessed with performing. He's a backup vocalist for a big time performing artist. He's been starving and struggling for years to get to that level.
Another of my good friends is obsessed with acting. He's currently living in a closet that he calls an apartment in NYC. He does small parts on Broadway.
Another of my good friends is obsessed with making films. He's currently living out of his mom's house in LA. He's working day jobs on set as a behind the scenes tech guy and moonlights at night with some buddies making films.
I'm obsessed with football. I walk down the street to my former high school and do what I love to do. If they don't want me, I'll walk an equal distance in the other direction and coach at our rival school. If they don't want me, I'll drive five minutes away to one of five other schools. Trust me, ain't nobody starving, struggling, or freeloading here. I'm the lucky one.

We don't think about football because we're coaches. We're coaches because we love football. Those slappies in the "Coaching Staff Rifts" thread, you think they think about football a lot?

Can't think of the last day where I didn't think about football in one way or another!

I'm just not interested in anything else. Football is all I want to know about.

I was just about to add every successful person is obsessive about whatever they are successful in. You don't think Bill Gates was obsessive about computers? You don't think all NBA players are obsessive about basketball? You don't think Tiger Woods was obsessive about Golf? If you love what you do then you really never work a day in your life - that's true. While I don't "LOVE" teaching, I like it pretty good and I like it better than any other job I've had...I'll love it in another 20 days that's for sure. Teaching affords me a non-conflicting schedule to be able to coach football - which is what I love to do. I broke up with a girl in July because I was working on football stuff and she said "I'll give you another 30 minutes, then I want as much attention as you've given football tonight." So 30 minutes later I put the football stuff down, I gave her the attention she wanted and I dumped her the next morning. I moved 2.5 hours south to coach football, not to date her. I had an old exgf beg me to stop coaching.I said how can you ask me to quit doing something you know I'm so passionate about? Needless to say that's part of why shes an ex.

I cannot get through the day without thinking football. Everything that I read or watch I try to figure how can I use this in some way. I space out all the time and my wife asks what I am thinking about and it is generally something like QB's footwork on a counter play or how to better prepare a defense for defending a zone read. Luckily she is understanding and gives me as much time as I need. I don't hunt, fish, or golf. This is what I do and I spend as much time with my family as humanly possible, especially this time of year because once August hits the "obsessiveness" kick into overdrive.

I agree, also as HC you have to always be on the search for more "dudes" cause those guys will the a HC somewhere else one day and will need to be replaced, and the next level guys won't cut it.
