New head coach here and am wondering how many new footballs each of you order each year. One of the things I never payed attention to as an assistant. We always want (2) new or near new per game. We also like to go into game one with 4 great conditioned practice balls. You know the GST's that have now turned brown instead of that orange color. So 20 would be a good number assuming most will be in good enough shape for multiple games.

I cant give you a number, but I know that we rotate the game balls out each year into practice balls.
First to QB, then WR, then RB, then DB, then LB, then DL, then special teams.

How do you answer this question based on your offensive preference?
We throw the ball ALOT, and thus we use a ton of footballs in practice and of course we switch balls in a lot more than a team that runs the ball a lot in a game.

One new leather one per year for each QB with his name on it, a few for receivers. Kickers get hand-me-downs. Everyone else uses cheap plastic ones. Plus game balls for home games.

No matter how many you get, do your best to squirrel away a couple in your basement or equipment cage.
There will be a day when you wish you had a couple of extras.

You play with the other team's balls for away games? It's all league-mandated. It's not so much "their balls" as it is "balls that they supply."

Two for every game and normally a couple extra for playoffs. We end up ordering 24-28 each year. Normally have 3-4 left over but depends greatly on the weather. Rainy type of season and we will use three or more new ones in a game.

Our QB's want the beat up ones for games... the well broken in ones. If the GST is still orange they don't even want to touch it.

15 balls a season. Scrub the GST with a clean damp cloth a couple of times and the qb will love it. It takes the waxy coating off and the ball is very tacky and easy to throw.

I order for JH, JV and varsity. Collectively that is 25 games. I order 25 footballs. Last year we had about 6 or 7 leftover.

I order 24 footballs every year. This is for both Varsity and JV. We break out 2 new balls every Monday, and pass 2 down to JV, and pass 2 JV ones down to the kickers. I've been lucky to be at private schools where money is a little better than the publics. I usually end the season with 5-6 balls for Spring, depending on playoffs.
