My son is going into 8th grade and had a successful year at defensive end for his 7th grade team. I wondered what drills he could be doing during the offseason to better himself for the upcoming year. Any suggestions for drills he could do with and without me present? Thanks

That's what I was going to suggest too. You might be able to marginally improve his play by doing some football-specific drill, but only with a coach and other players.

The best sports to play in the off-season for football players (in the order of preference, IMHO):
1. Martial Arts 2. Wrestling 3a. Basketball 3b. Lacrosse 3c. Rugby 3d. Track
There seems to be something of a correlation with baseball (i.e. a lot of good football players are good at baseball and vice-versa), but I don't see anything about playing baseball that makes a player better at football. JHMO.

"1. Martial Arts" covers a lot of ground. Could you specify which martial arts? It could even be said that wrestling is a martial art. Or are you saying that just about any martial art besides wrestling is tops?

We are approaching the first month of youth rugby. Don't know much about the sport, but I like how it seems to be developing the kids' motor. Nonstop running and tackling.

There is no off-season. Get a private coach or work with him yourself one on one. Work his get off move focusing on speed and burst. Point out the battleground he should focus in on pre-snap given a 3 step, 5 step and 7 step QB drop. Emphasize the need to develop speed to power skills. Work the club, swim and rip moves and get him to perfect various hand fighting drills. There is a double under move DEs are now executing to help get pad level under the O linemen. Never would I recommend waisting this precious time playing soccer or wrestling. Good luck.
