Coaches we use 2 high school players in our Rec games with one licensed Official per game. The issue I have is the high school young men are inconsistent at best on their calls, now I understand they can't see it all, but it's the blatant calls that are missed. We do put on two clinics that they must attend to be an official and they are actually paid per game... What do you guys do in your leagues? I don't want to cut the players out totally, BUT it doesn't help the players, Coaches, or parents at all if they aren't calling the games fair... It actually creates issues!!! Curious on how others handle this?

we pay a full squad of HS refs. most of the time the guys who did our HS game the night before will be our refs that day.
in our rules we cant use anything but CIF certified refs

We are the same as 33coach - full 4-man crews of HS refs. I think we pay them each about $50-$55 per game. Even with HS refs, you're going to get the bottom of the barrel - most of the better officials won't bother with sub-HS games, so it becomes a training ground for newer and weaker officials. Putting HS kids out there that realistically know almost nothing about the rules is lunacy.

What age group? And are they playing other towns or is it like a town league playing eachother like little league? I've never heard of kids refing before, except for our youngest age group which is 8&9's.

There really is no way to fix this. With my teams I preach over, and over, and over again, we will not make excuses. If the referee doesn't throw a flag then you better fight harder to get off the hold. If you get flagged then we have to go score that touchdown again.
You can try all you want to change the referee situation but the facts are the facts, youth referees are terrible. I have seen terrible high school kid refs and terrible middle aged refs. The result is the same.

Do they have specific mechanics? Two refs for 22 players is impractical at best, so you need to give them specific areas to look at to catch the most common calls.

This is a 3rd thru 6th grade league... The main issues I had was with tournament play. Missed calls, calling it on one team and not the other, etc... We are in Indiana so we use at least one IHSAA official per game....
