I coach a 5th/6th grade team. We are having a great season and currently sit a 5-1 in our division with one game left. We have locked up one of the 4 playoff spots. The worst we can do is the 3 seed and the best the 2nd seed. The team we play this weekend for our final regular season game is also 5-1. If we win, we are the 2 seed and they would be the 3. If they win, they are the 2 and we are the 3 and we would play each other again in the 1st round of the playoffs. In 4 of our 6 games so far, our 2nd and 3rd string guys didn't get much, if any playing time. We have a huge drop off from our starters to our back ups. This doesn't sit well with me and I am sure it doesn't sit well with the players and their parents. Here is my question, since this next game has no affect on the seeding for the playoffs and we will end up playing the same team in the 1st round of the playoffs, I was thinking of either having my back ups start thing game and play the majority of the game or having my starters start the game and then start pulling them after the first series. My thinking is that this would be a great way to get these guys playing time before the playoffs start where they may not seeing any time. It also would maybe give the team we play a false sense of security when they play us again in the first round. What are your thoughts? I appreciate any input you may have.

Thanks coachbry. Would you start backups and then bring in your starters or would you start your starters and start pulling after the first series or so?

I would put them in for at least a quarter whatever that is....I think putting in the starters in the middle of a quarter at the end of the half would be be good...put them in situations...that they will probably see in the playoffs....and without warning...it will get their attention.

What I would do coach is play your starters the first half of the game but don't run your prized plays- plays you want to keep under wraps. Put in maybe 4 plays and a formation for the playoff game..but don't run it this game. Run your most basic stuff with your starters for the first 2 drives- a dress rehearsal of sorts and sub liberally. You have to give your 1s another series in the 2nd half. So they aren't completely flat when they come out when it counts. You do this so the other team doesn't tweak there stuff and you do and you are set for the playoff game

Coach Smithers, we are running into the same problem this week too. Are game plan though is to play the starters for a half at the most and then sub in and out. We plan on throwing a few different formations with motions and etc to see how they are going to adjust.
