A compilation of speaking events, interviews, etc. Personally, I think there is some really good bits in here.

Great clip. Motivation for the coach and you're right in that there is a lot of great stuff in the clip. I like his 3 simple rules to follow as I think that's what most of us coach our kids.

Didn't Lou participate in or at least encourage a lot of dirty and illegal stuff while he was at ND?

Great clip. Didn't Lou participate in or at least encourage a lot of dirty and illegal stuff while he was at ND? Well, like he said he was born with common sense. If encouraging alot of illegal stuff can increase his chance to win with only a 10% Chance of getting caught hes gonna take it because that means theres a 90% chance he won't get caught.

I wouldn't say he did anything overly dirty or illegal. When he got to Notre Dame the program was really down in all aspects from the Faust Fiasco.
But the school wanted to get back to the championship days and Holtz guaranteed he could do that but not without some help from Admissions. Chris Zorich struggled with school, Stonebreaker struggled, and so on but they got in. And they won.
Then the so-so records and subpar times with Faust were forgotten. Now the Irish were challenging for championships and finishing in the top 10. So Admin started to tighten the screws on who was getting in again. The records slipped a little, Lou took heat over that and over some recruiting issues, and he's done.
What's interesting is two things: Notre Dame didn't lower their admissions standards to below what the NCAA would allow thus sneaking people in--they lowered their requirements below their usual standards.
Secondly, Notre Dame's prestigious image doesn't go back to its roots. In the early days many schools wouldn't play Notre Dame because they'd let anyone in. Some of their players in Rockne's day didn't graduate from high school and the Gipper spent more time in a pool hall than in classes.
And it's in all that why Notre Dame was not permitted to join the Big 10 Conference (at the time known as the Western Athletic Conference) despite their 3 requests to join.

I don't know, fellas...check out the book "Under The Tarnished Dome"...it's about the Holtz years at ND...Lots of bad things going on...steroids and drug use, academic dishonesty, kids getting in serious trouble and it getting swept under the rug...
Not saying that Lou was a bad coach...he certainly knew how to win football games. But I really don't think that Lou Holtz should be held up as a paradigm of inspiration. A paradigm of "win at all costs", maybe, but not someone who I would like to aspire to be like.

I thought most of the Under the Tarnished Dome stuff had not really panned out as solid information. ? Not doubting you Wildcat as I read it too, but just thought most of that was a lot of ugly journalism which could neither be proven nor disproven.

didn't intend for this to turn into a dogpile on lou holtz. his win/loss record is outstanding. his programs have had run-ins with the ncaa. irregardless of one's opinion of this, the idea was to merely post video of words/ideas that can be useful to a coach -- taken as words, despite who is actually speaking them and one's opinion of that person. fact: minnesota, notre dame, and south carolina were all cited by the ncaa for rules violations. fact: the only time holtz was specifically cited was when at minnesota but was not publicly penalized for that violation. ** pretty much all else is speculation (could be true, yes. could be stretched, yes. could be false, yes. could be a mixture of all 3, yes.) my take: disregard WHO is saying these things and listen to WHAT is being said. (and, minimize airing inuendo about someone if possible.)

I think the man is great. Every coach should read his latest book. I dont think he ever claimed to be a saint, but he was a great coach and inspirational speaker.
