Many years ago, my sister was in the marching band with the little brother of a friend of mine. The little brother apparently wised off once too often to my sister (who was built like a refrigerator with a head), and she popped him in the nose. He quit band and went out for football, eventually becoming a pretty good linebacker.
He just wasn't tough enough for band.

I stopped trying to talk most kids out of quitting a long time ago. I don't particularly want them out if they can't make a commitment. I get tired of hearing the excuses so I ask them to reconsider once and then inevitably wish them the best when they leave. I've only managed to talk two kids into staying out and they were both a PITA the rest of the season. I had a sophomore tell me once that he couldn't juggle PRE-ACT tutoring sessions and football. I didnt even argue, I smiled, said "have fun" and turned back to what I was doing. As a teacher, I deal with excuses for mediocrity all day long. I have to put up with it on the classroom and I don't care to do so in athletics. AMEN to your last statement!! The day I have to accept mediocrity on the field is the day I quit teaching. Maybe I have my priorities wrong but public education (not in all cases) is public mediocrity. MCRSA75

Not everyone is a football player.
"They need you more than you need them". This is what got me by more than a few occasions.
With all the time you are going to put into kids that are not your own, they better bleed footballs. So if they are not into it, they are doing you a favor by not playing and hanging with the band.
Don't sweat it. he may be back. My bet is he as a honey in the band and is thinking with the little head not the big head. So once she dumps him or he realizes there is more to HS than dipping his wick he'll be back and with a better attitude.

A few years ago a kid came in with a patch over his eye and said I have to stop playing because I scratched my anus. I told him since he had already started he couldn't stop playing. He was not very smart but he could tote the rock.

at our school, if you quit a sport. you cannot participate in another one until the season is over for the sport you quit. one of the few things our county does right. The district I was previously in took it one step better, if you quit football in 2013, you couldn't play another sport until football 2014. So if you quit, you're screwed for the whole school year.

Wow! What precipitated that? I've heard of kids being excluded from fall and winter sports after being cut from the volleyball, basketball or soccer teams but even that took some serious doing.

Surely you said it wrong, I just can't imagine a school saying "Hey man, you aren't good enough to make the soccer team so don't bother trying out for any other teams in or out of that season, you are just wasting our time and yours."

Wow, cutting a kid then excluding them from other sports sounds kind of cold. I don't know if they're still doing it but that was the policy for a school in our conference. I certainly didnt agree with it. The majority of the athletes in the school would go out for a cut-sport, get dropped and then go out for another sport offered in that time. So, a kid would get cut from the basketball team after two weeks and then go out for swimming. I guess their non-cut sports were being hurt by it. Seems like there's a better solution.

I'm quitting because: My momma's makin' me... I've got juvenile arthritis... I've gotta get a bone marrow transplant... I've gotta get closer to Jesus... We're moving to Mississippi(still here)... I'm gonna go play 4-A ball (still here)... I was devastated by the loss Friday night... I get bad headaches... I have blood on my eyes... I have bruised bones... I don't like running... My girfriend wants me to spend more time with her... To be honest coach, I'd rather be on the couch.

I love the "bad knees" that so many kids seem to have at 13, 14 & 15.
No, you're lazy and have never worked your knee past a parallel squat (without weight) so its uncomfortable. Or you're just really fat. Or both.
