Human beings respond better to attitudes or expectations than rules. I agree - and I hate rules... The 3 I have work with our core values in what we hope is creating great young men... We strive for the best but must hold the bottom accountable as well...

Here are a few, written or unwritten, they are rules:
1) make every practice or you are off the team (unless parent or admin excuses you) 2) dont be late, you will run 3) lock your gear up 4) have all your gear, dont lose it 5) dont swear, fight, bully, harass, intimidate, haze 6) dont take gear off (helmet off) without permission 7) run on the field, dont walk 8) positive energy, positive attiude, max effort at all times- lean lockers, clean field, clean wt room, clean bus, clean uniform 9) respect uniform, no me guys, be a team guy and look like everyone else, uniform clean, white sox 10) dont beg for playing time, earn it 11) if you are broken, you need a docs not to tell us when you are no longer broken and can play agin 12) detentions are like lates, you run 13) if you are hurt, you still practice within the limit set by the trainer 14) fix gear day before a game, not game day 15) no shower shoes, we dont do that, sneaker/cleats 16) you play wherever we need you to play, football players before positions 17) no parent coaching from sidelines, if you respond, you sit in the stands 18) no sleeping in film, you lose film privs, you run during film 19) work hard, dont sit in wt room- no loafing, loafs mean everyone runs 20) no bad reports, you get reminders if we get reports that arent flattering.
those are some basics

Chuck Martin (ND staff,Grand Valley HC with numerous national titles) gave a great talk at ND clinic a few years back..their Rule (or goal) at Grand valley State was "to be a great teammate"..kind of covers everything..easy to understand
he used to challenge them daily in what they did that day to "be a great teammate"..amazing when we do this how many answers we get that are not about football
BTW, i noticed Chuck switched to offense this year at ND..didn't really hear him touted as a reason for their success in 2012 but wouldn't surprise me (anyone know more?) ..he is a real winner..if you get a chance to hear him speak, take it
