This is directed to all of those who are able to have spring practice at the high school level. First of all are there any states that do not allow spring practice for high school? Secondly, what is your primary focus during spring ball?

Massachusetts has no spring football. I don't think new Hampshire does either.

Michigan has none, therefore;
You better have guys on staff who are T&F coaches or be the head coach yourself, T&F and Football go hand in hand. Track and Field is spring football with no hitting and extremely beneficial speed gains!

NC doesnt have official spring ball. But you have unlimited "skill development" days provided you have less that 22 players out at one time, and there is no body to body contact.

PA has no official spring ball but we are allowed to work out in helmets and shoulders pads all summer long with some contact rules you have to follow. I know of some teams that do it in the spring as well as they say the rule has no start or end date in it so in reality you can work out in helmets and shoulder pads all year long as long as you follow the contact rules that go along with the helmet/shoulder pads work outs.

We get ten days. I try to spend as much time as possible on our run game (off and def) because we can do 7 on 7 all summer. We work a small portion of passing game just to keep the defense honest and to keep the QBs and WRs from going crazy.

In our section of California, we get 20 hours of spring ball, so essentially 10 two hour days. For us this spring, being at a new school, its fundamentals and install install install.

10 days 2 hours each
Basic fundamentals and base O and D installation
We used a 3 day install plan last year
Got almost the entire offense put in during those 3 days and just repeated throughout the season

Those of you that install during spring ball, do your spring sport athletes miss out or do you reinstall during summer?

We aren't allowed to start spring ball until the last regular season contest of the spring sports. So if your baseball team goes deep into playoffs, you may miss a few guys, or choose to move back spring ball until they finish.

personally, I find spring ball overrated. Yeah, I said it. Spring ball in Louisiana is 10 days (down from 15). I've been at places where it was "install everything and win now!" and "just get the kids out and interested". Spring ball can be more of a distraction and logistical problem (now you have to issue gear, collect gear, get all the kids together to follow routine, etc) with little return. Every place I've been at with spring ball told me jack squat about what fall would be like because we always had academic issues and the spring stud(s) never panned out/stayed eligible.
I don't / can't recall any situation in Sept - Nov where I could ever say "Gosh, it sure was nice we did ____ in April because it paid off in this game!". I like spring ball because it lets you see and interact with the kids on the field in some great weather (and who isn't itching to run some drills at that time?).....but I don't see the value in it
When I was up north (iowa/illinois), there was no spring ball, but I recall getting MORE DONE without it (off-season conditioning).

We usually start Monday after baseball ends, our team isn't making the playoffs I think. We might miss 1 or 2 track guys who qualify and keep moving on in track but they're usually one of our better players and a returning varsity kid so they catch up just fine. We might go a week earlier because we only have a handful of baseball players, only drawback is one of them is a QB who is competing for starting job

We get about 20 days (17 contact) including a Spring game or Jamboree. We focus on fundamentals and getting a good look at our young players moving up to Varsity. We run limited Offense and Base Defense, very vanilla. Spring game is a good reward for the players' Dec-April off-season work and a catalyst for the summer workouts. Also good time for college recruiters to get a close up look at players in practice and game during May.

In Tennessee, we have a 15 school days to get in 10 practices. We are also allowed to scrimmage another school. We use spring practice to work on fundamentals. We also use it as a tryout for kids in the school that are interested in coming out for football. At the end of the spring practice we will have an inter-squad game that serves as a fundraiser.

No spring ball in Wisconsin or Minnesota. I know from being down south that fundys were always our focus come springtime with a basic install. 3 or 4 defensive looks and about 8-10 offensive plays.

Right around the corner...
How many days do you get?
What are your goals?
Do you think its beneficial?
Do you work any special teams?
How do you make it fun?

We try to make it game like to have fun. We split up into two teams and scrimmage...really compete and have fun. Kind of a Spring Game every day.
I also like to do special teams in these scrimmages. I know a lot of coaches don't do anything like that in the Spring, but it helps us identify some second tier guys that can help us on kick off, return, etc.
We also do other games...we don't run or punish anyone for anything...stay very loose. We don't really script it.
Anybody else got any good games for Spring Practice? Not just Oklahoma or anything like that...something fun and original?

I kind of agree with Brophy on this. Sometimes, we coaches are keeping up with the other programs around our area. "well, if they are doing it, then we must do it." In KY, we can do 10 days of spring with full contact. In summer, well let's just say you can do whatever you want minus shoulderpads.
I still go back and forth on what is best for our program - kids learn things in spring and just like their school work, most forget it by the time summer starts backup. but then again, i can provide a bunch of examples where kids really developed and proved themselves.

We don't install much...like you said...the kids forget it...Spring Ball to me is just fun, a change up from the weight room, fundamentals and most importantly...helps you find a player or two...a stand out that can help you somewhere...a kid that can may not have got a chance but the starter is playing baseball and he gets more reps...we find a couple gems every year in the spring...

I love it!
We get a chance to try new things and brush up on old ones..
Yes we see the kids every day in the summer, but for the OL they get to push people around for 10 days.
We do a 3 day install and will do the same thing when camp starts and we will have played in 1000 7 on 7 games. But I like the spring just to get kids back in the swing of things if only temporary. I would like to do it much earlier than we do but cant because of spring sports.

No spring ball in IL or Iowa, but it would be hard for us to do it, because spring sports normally go all the way through May. As previously mentioned, IL gets 25 "contact" days over the summer. The term "contact" doesnt' refer to full pads, it simply means coaches can have contact with players, although if you want to go in full pads for some or all of these days you can.
I don't believe we are restricted to a number of days in Iowa, but it would work out to about 25 days as well. We didn't do any fullpad or shell work last summer. I don't know if these are Iowa rules or just how our HC prefers to do it.

I'm with Brophy and Tiger....
I'm in KY, too. I think for some schools, spring practice is great. But, where I'm at, we don't really get anything out of it to be honest.
Fact is, most of my skill kids play baseball (big baseball school here, but we share athletes) or run track. I will, however, take out the linemen and we'll get a lot of Indy/Technique work in. Now, how much does it matter come July? The PC answer is "We get so much better!". The honest answer is, "Probably doesn't amount to squat."
Thankfully, though, we are able to get a ball out and do as much as we want (without helmets) amongst ourselves anytime from January 1 up until our State wide "Dead Period" in late June- Early July (two weeks long, for all sports). Come April and May, we try to get out and do stuff on air with our skill kids that we have available (but, back to baseball and track....3 of my 4 QB's are Baseball or Track & one does Both.)
I forgot to add this, too....several of our linemen also wrestle, and while the KHSAA wrestling season just ended, many of them wrestle what's essentially AAU. Those guys lift, then go to wrestling 3 nights a week...which, Ill be honest...I'm all for.
For those at bigger (even smaller ones like us) schools that don't have a lot of multiple sport athletes, I think it can be great.

I'm in Iowa, which is obviously a big wrestling state but it works the same way for us. The season "ended", but then there are freestyle tounaments that started the very next weekend. I don't mind this at all, but it seems kind of weird to me.
