In looking at my approaching retirement, I was thinking about what I want my legacy to be...beyond just the game, but as a man. If people had to answer the question: "Who was Coach...what was he like?" ... how would I want them to be able to respond? More importantly: if The Great Scorer in the Sky were to answer that same question--at the Pearly Gates--what would He have to say?
I thought long and hard, and passed over all the possible coaching and leadership cliches.
I think, in the grand scheme of things, I simply would like to be remembered as follows:
He was kind... he was compassionate... and he cared about other people.
That would work for me. What about you?
How do you want to be remembered?

You know, Thats a great question and I have been thinking about it all day...so...I always talk to my kids about being a man and treating your future wife/girlfriend the right way...Working hard to support your family etc..You know the drill..Well if they in turn teach their kids the same thing I taught them, I guess I would like that to be my legacy

I just want people to remember me in a positive light. We all know those people that as soon as you mention their name, everyone around rolls their eyes, mumbles something, or has something negative to say about them.
I want my past players to look back and think that i was a positive influence on their life as a human being, and that I made them a better football player
I want coaches to look back and think...He's a good guy, he works hard as a coach, he knows his stuff
I want people to think of me as someone who was always willing to help
I have never said no to a coach or a player who has asked for help. I get an email or two a day from someone on here or on my blog and I always make the time to write back to them and answer the questions to the best of my ability

As a Man who made a difference in the lives of those he came in contact with.
That's why I got into coaching.
And of course that's what you'd better do first as husband and father.

I coach in a smaller town and people still talk about past coaches here and the affect they had on their lives. A lot of what they say is not about wins and losses but how they treated kids, what they did for kids and that they were always there for every kid and made every kid feel important. I want to be the coach that when kids look back 30, 40 or 50 years from now they say I taught them not just about football but about life and being a great husband, father and person.

As a Man who made a difference in the lives of those he came in contact with. That'll be enough for me when I get to that point.

That I was the man I said I'd be...willing to do what others wouldn't, so others could get what they need

As a free thinker who instilled critical thinking skills in his players. To not just accept dogma but to investigate for themselves the great questions in life and to be active learners in the class room.

After I'm dead and gone I want my former players to sit around and tell a couple of funny stories about me while drinking a beer. I hope that they don't take us coaches as seriously as we sometimes take ourselves. I hope they know that the wins were about them, and I'll take all the losses. I hope that it doesn't even oocur to them how much work I put into this stuff until the first time they coach their own kid's pop warner team. I don't want to be remembered as the star of their movie, just a member of their supporting cast. I tell all of my players that if they ever want to go into coaching they have to be able to kick my ass. If we fight and they lose, they're going to med school and make some money!!! Coachfd, enjoy retirement. I don't think I'll ever convince myself to retire. I enjoy this stuff way too much.
