Was wondering if you HC's out there let players leave before home games? On the flip side do you allow talking on the bus for away games?

No, I must baby-sit them!
I space coaches out on the bus to manage them on away games.
Our kids are way immature!

Was wondering if you HC's out there let players leave before home games? On the flip side do you allow talking on the bus for away games? Everybody rides the bus. Whether we let them talk depends on how long the trip is. For most games we have a 20 minute drive and we expect quiet. On a "long" trip (an hour or more) we won't make a big deal about it but we don't want them going crazy.

"Inside" voices and school-appropriate language on bus.
That old "no talking on the bus" derives from when we had coaches who were in the military, many in WWII, and that was the way it was on their way to missions.
It's outdated and unnecessary.

School gets out at 3:10 and we eat at 4:00. What they do in the time in between is up to them (although they're not allowed to go into the gym and play basketball).

no school on Fridays so the kids are on their own schedule until we bring them in for team meal, which is typically around 330. minimal talking on the bus. we want them to be relaxed on the ride. 3 assistants ride the bus while myself and the coordinators ride in a school suburban. its a good time for us to go over final game plans and relax before the storm hits.

3:25 school is out, go move cars to Sr parking lot (away from the stadium), get books/go to lockers, kiss your ugly girlfriend one last time. DON'T LEAVE CAMPUS 3:45 Roll call; Special teams check; any pregame speech, team building activity 4:30 Eat, dress, start taping 5:30 Offensive walk through in gym 6:00 Defensive walk through in gym 6:25 1st group out- specials 6:35 Everybody out, field sweep, indy warm up, pregame indy, team 7:15 Back to the field house, bus around to come down the 'hill' 7:30 Kick off
Away games, depending on the distance, adjust times. Once on the bus, you can talk but you should be focusing on the game at hand. Most of ours have the ear buds in listening to music. The defensive bus is usually pretty quiet except for the coaches chatting. When I have driven the offensive bus it was the same.

No, they can't leave. Too many bad things that can happen....some because they can be "stupid" (drugs, girls, etc) and some because things can happen outside of their control that can affect game night. (ie a car accident---how do you replace them on that short notice?). They are teenagers---they need supervision. They are limited as to where they can be and we keep them busy. Pregame meal, meetings, etc. No playing around, etc.
As for the bus deal, I used to be no talking. Now I'm with the above poster--long trips they can talk for part of the way---quietly. Short trips 15 minutes or so--quiet.

Our players can leave but talking is NOT allowed! So why let them leave for home games? If talking is a big deal. The no talking is their rule not ours. We don't police anything as long as they are focused. Most are the same after school for home games too. They msy go get a bite to eat but no one talks from 3:20 until pregame.

Yes, we have to let them leave since we do not have an on campus filed that we play at.
Yes, they can talk on the bus. Some of our games are close we take a cheese bus. We are lucky to have school/boosters who are able to upgrade to a coach for longer trips, so throw in a movie and usually less talking. Not to mention our school is giving all the kids an iPad now, so they take those with them and it's like zombie land on the bus now.

HC around here let his kids loose before home games and wound up getting 13 expelled for smoking pot. Too many distractions or things that can happen, also what if it's something practical like their car breaks down. We keep them here, feed them, and try and keep the talking to inside voices like blb said. On away trips the "player" bus is queit but the police that themselves, no clue about the other bus as I'm not fortunate enough to ride it (sarcasm intended).

Those of you that are saying you would keep them for home games, what kind of a difference is there between the end of the school day and kickoff? We get out at 2:15 and kickoff is 7:30. I can't imagine what we would do that was productive for over 5 hours. Are you guys looking at similar dismissal times, or are you getting out later?

Put the, in a quiet dark room and take their phones and iPods away and they will sleep. It would keep them well rested and possibly more focused if you limit the time to an hour. Then feed them and possibly have a meeting and get ready to go

I can't imagine making kids stay on campus. I don't see a purpose for it at the HS level. I think, for us anyway, it would be counter-productive.
But to answer the OP's question, our school is out at 1:50 for us so the players are free until they need to report to the locker room which is around 5:15.
We also allow talking on the bus, the ride to the game is usually held to a loud whisper though

I was thinking about back in High school my sophomore year we had a 6 o clock game on a thursday night(half day). Of course everyone in our team piled in cars and went down into town for the mall, etc. Our TE/DT was speeding down the road(trying to impress girls) and wound up rear ending someone(he was fine, but wound up with a concussion) and had to miss a huge game which we wound up winning. Moral of the story, you gotta keep them under wraps at all times

Yeah last game of the season which is our huge rivalry game we had to leave a kid home because he couldn't find a ride back to the field house and didn't ask anyone until it was time for us to leave. He was a starter so it hurt us

On buses we enforce either silence for the first hour of the journey (or half the expected journey time, if it's less than 2 hours). After that the guys are generally more relaxed and coherent. Then we'll stick on some music and they'll slowly get themselves in the right frame of mind for the game.

Still get all the major breaks, 17 days for Christmas, week for spring break and we are done the same time in May as the rest of the schools. its really nice. at 1:20 on thursdays i'm done with class until Monday morning

We always have a game night that falls on a Friday Inservice, so the kids have no school. Usually ends up being a big game since the end of the quarter fails towards the end of the regular season. We bring the kids in early, around 9-9:30 have a quick walk through/last minute film then send them home before lunch. Mainly for 2 reasons: 1- Make them get out of bed around the normal time 2- Make them get some food in the belly around the normal time Then they are due back at the time school would get out, 3:30. The main thing is try to keep the body on something of a routine for sleep/rest and nutrition. In the past we have tried to find something to keep them busy all day, like having a team movie, etc.... but now as long as them don't going running around all night, get up at a decent time, get something to eat; then they can go back home and lay around until time to get ready.
