Wondering if any of the coaches had the experience Michigan apparently had tonight, where they had a really solid season last year, thought they were "back", were heralded as a nationally elite team and just got WORKED by Bama and basically shown that "nope, you don't belong on this field. You aren't on this level yet".
Curious if any coaches here had the HS equivalent, where you thought the team had reached the "next level" and then got hammered playing an opponent on that level. How did the players respond, how did the coaches...were there any residual effects from the game.

We had an opposite experience. Game one we played state runners up who were apparently a level above us. The game was supposed to be a tune up game. Well, we won .

Yep me this weekend. Worst football weekend of my life. I was arrogant and I got outcoached. My freshman team lost, my sons varsity team got worked and my youth football team lost in overtime. We have the most talented athlete on the youth team, I neglectedmost of the team and put it all on him. I feel like a truck ran me over. Severly depressed about how I handled my teams. I know better.

Couple of seasons ago.
New program. Had a great season onily losing to 2 teams. One of whihc won the championship. We head to the playoffs confident but not overly confident. Had a great gameweek, great scouting. But then just got worked in the 1st round of the playoffs and drumped out 42-21.
Brought everyone back down to size.

I have been in a situation where I thought we were better than we were...and an opponent showed us exactly that! Other than going back to the drawing board and working in practice to get better, I'm not sure what you do!

Seriously, yes I have. About four years ago we were supposedly on the hot seat as a staff. We lost the first two games of the season then won the last seven (including the first district championship in 18 years). We drew what we considered to be a beatable first round opponent. 7 turnovers later we lost 55-21 (we had 2 turnovers in the seven wins!) Longest bus ride home I've ever had as a coach.

Alot of us have at the high school level. It's very difficult to "reload" a few can do it, but most of us can't. It's a hard pill to swallow to follow a great season and not be as good as you thought. Happened to me in 1985. Had a very successful season, put a couple of stars in college, thought I had enough coming back to keep it going. But at the pre-season Jamboree, I saw that we were not going to be as good. And, it was true. Hard to take, but, that was a great lesson learned.
Most high school have to play the kids that actually go to the school, however, some private schools don't have that problem and can bring in various "working parts" to fill in the gaps.

Last year... Week 1 we gave up 35 points. Week 2 we gave up 21. Feeling good about Week 3. 69 points and a general sh!tshow of a defensive effort that left me wondering how I could be so wrong about us.

It happened to us a few years ago. We'd just won two straight state championships and were at a big jamboree out of state (one that we'd went to the year before). We went up against a national power and they did whatever they wanted to us.
It didn't turn out to be a bad thing. We had weaknesses exposed and were able to fix a lot of them. Although we didn't go all the way we still had a good year, 9-3 I think. It's a humbling experience but sometimes being humbled is exactly what you need.
Colleges are at a disadvantage in that they don't play scrimmages. I like tough scrimmages because if things are going to go bad I'd rather have it happen when it doesn't count. Michigan doesn't have that luxury. What did they really lose, though? It wasn't a conference game. They played bad, the other guys played good. Stuff happens. Handle it right, fix the problems, and move on.

My only saving grace was we had 12 (I counted last night) penalties, 4 turnovers. We played a team that won the superbowl last year. They went undefeated and gave up only 2 scores last year. We lost in overtime. So after I watch the film, I come away with, we where out coached and out played and still they just edged us ou.t by an extra point. We have alot of improvement and I don't think they have alot to improve on. We will see them again but until then as the kids say these days "do work". Blb that was a great quote and its so true! We lost 42 to 44
