Hey Coaches,
Wondering what your "must-haves" are when it comes to choosing your team captains. I've got a kid I'm considering who is our toughest player and the best leader in the weight room but who can be a huge pain in the butt in the classroom and totally immature in most unstructured environments. The kids want him as team captain but I'm bothered by the social immaturity and lack of respect for his teachers. I want to be certain when I nominate a captain but I also want a guy the kids will rally behind... and he's that kid.
Any thoughts on what you consider when nominating a captain would be great...

I don't choose captains, but two thoughts come to mind:
1. The Alpha Male Test: With wolves, you can watch a pack and know who the alpha male is without any show of force or fighting, etc. You can tell simply by body language, and by whom the rest of the pack looks to. Leaders are apparent, if you just observe your team and players.
2. Who would you want your daughter to marry?
I think those two considerations might give you some insight into who the rest of the "pack" follows, and who has the character, integrity, and intelligence to make the grade.
