How many of you guys have assistants who are head coaches in other sports? In my present situation I inherited three guys who were all head coaches in other sports. Two of the three treated their football job as secondary in importance to "their" sport. I went through a year of listening to my other three assistants who really were great workers complain about the other two. I finally decided that it was best for our program if I got rid of the two who were the problem. So, I asked the administration to remove both of them from the football program. I've been on staffs where guys really didn't like each other's personalities, but were able to work together. Not everyone is going to get along all the time, but everyone has to be able to respect the job each other is doing. Getting those guys out of the office and out of practice has made everything a lot better. We are now a 4 man staff, but we are all on the same page, and everyone is hooked up. In short we trust each other and know that we all want the same thing.

I would say that everyone on the staff has to have a "similar" love of the kids, competition, and football in general:
I know it sounds strange, but I knew we would be in trouble from the get-go, when I tried to get a little "Madden-Franchise" and "NCAA Dynasty" set up with all of our staff besides the HC (he is the only married one with kids so he doesn't exactly have free time to play games)... At my last school, we used this as kind of a "bonding time" with the other coaches, where we could get a feel for each other, and our different philosophies about football. The game being the "center" of what was basically a team-building that happened all season long... NOBODY INTERESTED LAST YEAR. Always had something come up, or couldn't make it because the girlfriend says I don't spend enough time with her...
So I tried to get a little bit of a Saturday, "come to my house for beer & BBQ while we watch football together", where the girlfriends could come and hang out as well... again no dice...
We just didn't have all the coaches at the same level of "LOVE" for football as I think you need to have a successful staff.
Last year we had a few coaches on our staff that would show up 10 seconds before practice/game started and would leave about 10 seconds afterwards. All while the HC, myself, and our OL/DL guy would be at practice very early to greet the kids, and get things planned out... as well as staying afterwards to talk about how the practice went, and what we think we need to work on again the next day. It was very difficult with only input from the three of us.
When we broke down film and did gameplans, the HC and myself (he calls O, I call D) were the only ones to show up and gameplan... It was a difficult season to say the least.
BUT ON A POSITIVE NOTE...
Our AD is a great guy, and when he found out about our situation basically told the 10-second guys to shape up because they won't be around if they don't... And they aren't this year! The HC is going to be more of a stickler for getting input from EVERYONE for gameplans this year, since we basically ran ourselves ragged last year.
We all got along great last year, and the new guys we brought on this year get along well also. But there was not a sense last year of everyone on the staff TRUSTING each other... We are looking to change that this year and hopefully it will improve the program a ton.
