Have a kid miss the last three practices for various reasons - no idea why on one day, other day a college visit, feel like he could have made it back for practice, another day said he is having problems at home and lack of sleep so didn't come to school, missed practice, but still came to a school function later that night. We play later this week, he is a starter on one side of the ball, but this will not affect my decision whatsoever. Any recommendations? I think I already have my mind made up but has anyone ever dealt with this crap before?

Since he missed two practices un-excused, he'd be benched for that game. Our policy is half a game per un-excused practice. We honestly get this crap all the time. We have a major discipline issue in our program.

We have a major discipline issue in our program. Do you allow him to travel with the team to the game? That is what I'm struggling on, he is not playing for sure. Which kind of sucks because we have very little depth at the position, but confident we can get the job done with who we have that will fill in. Sad thing is, kid had his best game last game, close to 200 yards rushing with multiple scores. The whole college visit thing bothers me because the college is about an hour away and I know he could have gotten back to practice. Add to the fact it is the biggest game for us of the year.

Doing the right thing is hard. Doing the right thing may cost you a win. But.... It's better for the program. The other players are watching this situation and waiting to see how you handle it.

I'd sit him.
We have a rule that if you miss a practice in a week you sit a quarter. 2 in a week and you sit for the whole game. If they are sick or have to sit out for an injury they can still play as long as they show up and learn and then do some extra conditioning.

Our rule is no call, no show; no dress on gameday. Very simple. We VERY rarely have issues because of it.

I agree with everyone on here.....sit him
I took over our defense this year and the first thing I did was sit a three year starter because he missed practice. He had been allowed to get away with it for three years and was so mad. He has not missed practice since.
It is amazing how kids are sick and tired when they do not lose playing time, but when you put playing time on it they can make it to school and practice.

same as coach plaa no call, no show he does not play that week. He does it again he is off the team. if a kid misses practice for the B.S. reasons you gave that is the same as unexcused.

I have been in this same situation all year long and I have not been nice about it. I had a player miss four days of practice and he only had a good reason for one miss. I told him he had to travel with us that weekend, he wouldn't be playing and he couldn't miss a single practice the rest of the year or he'd be done. He's been pretty good about it so far.
I would have booted him off of the team anywhere else but it's a whole different world here. I call home every time a kid disappears on me and not a single parent has know where their boy was. The aforementioned football player missed three days of school in a row and his mom said his buddies from college were in town and she let him stay home. It's hard for me to run things the way I normally would when the kid's parents don't hold them accountable for anything.

He would just be a distraction.

Depends on the kid.
WILL he be a distraction? If so, then don't bring him.
If you think he can be "shamed", that he will take his punishment like a man and be supportive, then bring him. It could be a very powerful experience either way - whether you win and establish you don't "need" him and he sees it, or you lose in a way he could have helped, and he has to sit there and watch the other ## guys on the team take the hit because of him.
He sits home, it's not real for him. Maybe it's not even if you take him, but at least then, he has to sit and watch, and his teammates have to watch him sit and watch.

I like the "shame" answer. Bring'em, dress'em, bench'em. Nothign worse for a starter to have to ride the bench. Street clothes on the sideliine has this uncanny affect of making our guys feel special- the exact OPPOSITE affect we go for...

What to do if...
Guy miss some practices during offseaon - how to "punish" him ? I cannot sit him because we dont play right now. I cannot kick him out of the team cause of a really small roster.

I'd like to extend my question. How to build discipline druing off-season? I dont mean tyrrany, but no talking during exercises, jog and not walk when you're on the field, dont take off your helmet, dont be late for practise - little but important things.
What if you say to a kid "put your helmet on" and he does it but roll his eyes while doing it.

If a kid is missing practice in-season, he isn't THAT INTO THE TEAM and his teammates know it. Play the kids that deserve to play and you will get as much output, and much more effort. If a kid is missing practice in off-season, same deal. We reward the kids that show with Pride Points, and they get rewarded with priority in equipment handout, team duties, jersey numbers etc.

Our policy is 1 practice = No Start 2 practice = a half 3 practice = a game

Missed practice time is always dealt with at practice. A missed practice is always 500 yards worth of reminders - running 500 yards with a grasser every 5 yards. The kids who miss practice can't do anything until the reminders are completed. If the reminders are completed by game time, no game time is missed.
