I just received an email about this from our DSV vendor. Kind of a crazy surprise to me, feels like Coke buying Pepsi. I'm not so much interested in any kind of reactionary stuff as much as hoping some one can explain what this means for the immediate future and down the road.
What I know: 1-If you purchased DSV, you now have HUDL Online instead of DSV Anywhere. 2-DSV will be supported by HUDL for as long as existing support contracts (through 2011 season for most) 3-If you have an existing copy of DSV, it's yours forever, just know that it's not getting upgraded or supported ever again.
I'd love if some of the more in-the-know folks from HUDL (Mav, etc) could contribute some more info about whatever they can share, etc.
That said, all hail our new HUDL overlords!

I'll be curious to see how or if Hudl will change their Video Editor to simulate DSV. I know many have requested that Hudl add playbook software, so I am sure that will come directly from DSV. It's only a matter of how it will be integrated into Hudl.

? So does this mean that DSV will be pretty much obsolete? I was just on DSV Anywhere.... Any more details would be great.

I read the blog post on the hudl website and it sounds like if hudl has bought out DSV, but isn't saying it in those words. If hudl is the "facebook" of the internet like it claims then DSV must be the "myspace."
How is it that purchasing hudl gives you an automatic upgrade to DSV?
IMHO, DSV has more components to use especially for opponent breakdown, but hudl is cheaper and more and more people are using it.

3rdandLong - If you are currently in a DSV support contract for the 2011 season, you will be upgraded to DSV 8 so that it works with Hudl instead of DSV Anywhere. You will also get a free Hudl account for this year as a part of that transition.
If you had planned on purchasing DSV support, you can simply buy a Hudl account. We'll upgrade your install of DSV to the latest version and you can choose to use either Hudl or DSV.
Feel free to call the DSV transition hotline at 402.937.9657 and we can answer any questions you have.

After years of me staying on my head coach about getting us some sort of editing/scouting system, including the free trial of Hudl last year we spent thousands of dollars on DSV this year.
Their main selling point to the head guy was that it was a one time purchase. How much are we going to have to spend yearly now?
I'll be honest, this sounds like s huge cluster and it's got me worried especially since a third of July is almost gone.

deaux68,
You should definitely have everything you paid for - you'll be able to continue to use the DSV software you purchased this year. You'll continue to receive support through the remainder of this season, and if you continue on as a Hudl subscriber, through the 2012 season.
We definitely encourage you to give our transition hotline a call tomorrow and we can talk through further what the acquisition means to you and your team. We know this is a hectic time of year and we'd like to make it as painless as possible as you roll into the 2011 season.
Let us know what we can do to help.
-The Hudl Team

Hudl,
Our staff is pretty well versed in DSV, especially the breakdown component of it. Will we still be able to breakdown our opponents using DSV this season?

3rdandlong,
Absolutely. You can keep breaking down film on DSV, and while your DSV content won’t be available in Hudl automatically today, we are working aggressively to complete that process as soon as possible.

here are my 2 cents on the buyout
I have read everyones opinion on this board (mostly hudl users and pro hudl people)
I am also a member of another board who's members are almost all DSV people ( I might be the only hudl person there)
DSV people are kinda pissed, they feel like they have purchased somehting that has been taken away from them, they are worried about changing and learning how to use an all new system, and they chose DSV for a reason, they thought it was the best thing out there so to them they have lost big time with this transaction.
All us HUDL folk are pretty happy because nothing has changed for us, we just added 3,000 schools we can trade with online.
I have messed with DSV a little in the past and I was confused the whole time... I have found HUDL much easier to navigate and work with. I think Hudl is a better overall system and think over time as the DSV people switch over and begin to play with HUDL they will see why they have made such a tremendous impact in the market in the last couple years.

We understand that some coaches are concerned with the acquisition, especially with it happening in July. We want to make sure coaches coming from DSV know that the DSV software is still yours to use as long as you like, plus we will be adding better online tools and an even larger support team for you (DSV employees are going to be joining Hudl's support team and will be available through the same phone number as before). DSV and Hudl coaches will now have truly seamless exchange with each other and recruiting will be much more centralized which means better exposure for athletes across Hudl and DSV schools. We really want to make sure this is a win for everyone. We wouldn't have pursued the acquisition if we didn't believe it was in the best interest of the coaching community.
For coaches who are skeptical about switching this close to the season, we totally understand. You can keep using DSV and as long as you’ve paid for DSV this year or paid for a Hudl subscription, you get the same DSV support you’re used to and will have Hudl's support team at your service, too.
If you haven’t paid for DSV and you don’t have a DSV contract, it is totally up to you if you want to keep using your DSV software without support or subscribe to Hudl. If you buy a subscription to Hudl you'll get a free upgrade to DSV 8.0, DSV support, Hudl support, and Hudl's online tools.
When it comes to your content, your video and data will still be on your computer with your DSV software if that is the case now. We will also be syncing all of your 2010 video/data, spring video/data, and any new video/data you break down in the DSV software automatically to Hudl. We are still finalizing the syncing to Hudl and as soon as it is ready, you will be able to take advantage of your DSV content in Hudl and get the best of both worlds.
We’ll still support your DSV software for the next two years and make sure you have an awesome experience and not only don't have disruptions this season but get to take advantage of an incredibly powerful combination of the best video editing systems out there.

HUDL,
When will the DSV remotes be able to work with HUDL?

Right now the we are testing out remote capabilities in-house. In the next release (barring any unforeseen setbacks), we are planning to release an app that lets DSV remotes work with the video player on Hudl.

Glad to know that $$$ for those remotes won't go to waste! Is there any odd chance you might let slip some (if any) plans to incorporate or blend aspects of DSV into HUDL?

HUDL + DSV = Super HUDL...
10 years from now Super HUDL evolves with ever changing technology and becomes SKYNET
5 years later AI is created
2 years after that the AI revolts
and within a year the whole human race becomes slave to SKYNET and its Terminators

To be honest, I don't personally like the fact that every school around has the same software as I do now. I feel like if we're giving the opponent the same advantage. I'm a young coach, but I have somewhat of an old school mentality. I think I'd rather just exchange VHS copies and break down the games by hand to ensure that I outwork the opponent on the weekends.

Seriously? I could care less I want our team to win and not win because the other team had a bad night or because we had better film but because we played our best and executed better on game day. I think this is great for a few reasons: -game exchange -out of season help ie: we want to run air raid or wing T and we want to trade with a team who has been through this already and wants to help yet we will never play against. I don't get the secretive mentality maybe it is just me.
