Conference championship game for a place in the show. We'd gone 6-1-1 and won the division. Rolled into the conf. game with some ease and set up a rematch with the team we'd previously tied with on opening day. They were a great team - athletic, well coached and hungry. We had - imo - the best defense in the country (UK!), but weren't ready for the way they rolled in.
We started slow and shipped an opening drive TD. Responded with a TD drive but from there it was one way traffic and gave up another score at the half and were staring a 28-6 deficit in the face. Our bone offense wasn't having much success and whilst we'd repped a handful of our single wing plays (system we'd ran for the previous 5 years) just to give us a change up should we need it. Unless we were going to be able to play defense it really wasn't an option...
Let the seniors and captains lead the way at halftime, and let them loose on D to try and create some disruption. We returned the opening kickoff for a score to pull to 28-12 but couldn't trouble the scoreboard again in the 3rd.
Figured we had nothing to lose to switched to our SW for the 4th Q. Only 12 minute quarters so time was running away. Our first possession on the 4th and we rip off a couple of huge runs, score the TD, convert the 2pts and it's 28-20. Opponent fumbles the KR but we come up short on 4th down and have to hand it back. D is playing absolutely lights out and force the punt. We're backed up on our own 15 inside of 4 mins. Back up tailback drops the snap on 1st down...recover it at our own 6. Same kid steps up next play and gashes off tackle for 50 yards. We come back and finish the drive with a score with 2 mins left. Convert the 2 pts again to tie it up. We kickoff and they fumble the kick again. We recover and within 3 plays are knocking on the door....we score our 3rd TD within 7 mins and converts it to ice it 36-28 with maybe 30 secs left.
Went on to win the bowl game the following week. Unbelievable effort from a group of kids who were determined to achieve their dream and absolutely refused to accept defeat.
