I've been asked to write a letter of recommendation for a football player. Do you have any experience writing one? Where can I find some samples? Thank you.

Usually you'll want to mention how long you've known them, in what capacity, what talents/attributes they have that are worthy of acclaim, etc.
I've written one or two. Be careful about being too effusive, don't want to over-sell the product (kid) or make the readers think you're not being genuine.

Example in the attachments. Wrote it for a girl that I taught last year, I feel like this is an example of perhaps being too effusive, but this girl really was a rock star.
Apologies for the double post, but evidently you can't edit in an attachment.

Wrote 27 letters last year. 19 the year before. 7 so far this year.
I take them pretty seriously. I never say something I don't mean but I very rarely turn anyone down outright. I've sent letters that said "So and so is a decent student, of average intelligence, and is personable and could be a good addition to your university." and I've sent letters that have said, "So and so is the best student I've ever had as a teacher, possesses an Einsteinian intellect, and is a once in a lifetime leader: When so and so says he is going to be President of the United States I believe him. If you are lucky enough to receive an application from this student you need to jump on the opportunity to have him on your campus."
When a kid really wants to go to his reach school I write special letters sometimes. When a kid is shooting for a top level college (have kids at ivys and service academies) I do the same. Individually addressed, school names in the letter, etc.

I make sure I get a list of what the student/athlete has done on and off the field (work, volunteering, etc.) I know the person pretty well, but like to include other items such as these when I write.

I make the student give me the following: GPA, a list of all activities he/she has been part of here at school, anything he/she has been involved in outside of school (dance group, youth group, volunteer rec council coach, volunteer at soup kitchen, part time job, etc).
My letters usually play up the student's strengths, especially if the student is not great academically.
