Ironically, I just got a butt chewing from my wife about all the notebooks and videos/dvds that I had in the entertainment center under the TV.

Hawke, now that is awesome Lots of these younguns don't know the sound of one of the fancy 16mm projectors that would jump back and forth with a remote. First one I saw was in 1973 when I was a soph. That is a very special sound and I had forgotten that one. But there is no way that I had that thing on the bed, man you are CRAZY. OJW

Well OJW it's often been said that my dip stick doesn't touch the oil. I bet you remember when all the players sat in front of the coaches during FILMS and that little remote button had the projector going back and forth with that wonderful whirring sound and you sat there saying to yourself, "damn he saw the mistake I made!" and you waited to have your butt chewed out. What a wonderful feeling! All this new, fancy electronic gadgets have really taken the fun out of it. LOL

ah yes, the 16mm projectors -- best thing about them is that didn't always work - or the film didn't get processed right, or didn't come back on time - or the film would break!!!!
I still remember when i was a junior and dreading all weekend cuz I (and several team mates) had missed a tackle on an opponents long kickoff return. Had the kid dead to rights - dropped my head - he juked and I ended up on the ground. Filmer had missed the play - coaches asked who had missed the tackle (there were others too!) and of course none of piped up. We alll kind of breathe a sigh of relief as the coaches let the play go.

In reading this I have seen a difference in perspective of head coaches and career assistants. Until you are doing it you will never understand the year round grind of being a head guy. I am a head coach and I love coaching, love it. As a head guy though "coaching" as far as football goes ends up being about 20% of your job. Weightroom, boosters, parents, fundraising, grades, recruiting, NCAA eligibility, discipline (in school), etc. When I was an OC I didnt have to worry about any of that, or very minimal. I helped run weightroom, I would get on kids about grades but only out of concern for the kid, not reviewing the grades of every kid.
I think my answer is I don't think I will ever stop coaching all together, could see a year off at some point, or more likely taking an OC position with another hc that I respect for a year or two when the other stuff takes too much time from my kids and wife. Until then I'll still put in the insane year round hours because if I'm gonna do something I'm gonna do it right.

Good points, ucb.
Assistant who replaced me when I left last job says he has a new respect for what head coaches go through in the off-season, especially dealing with administrators and getting kids to commit.
He was already wondering if it was worth it but his wife told him in no uncertain terms he wasn't going to quit, at least until after the season.
On the flip side, I know head coaches in our state who are still going strong in their 60s and even 70s.

I still keep a paper and pad at the bedside and wake up in the middle of the night with some cockeyed ideas running through my mind.I'll have to print that to show my wife I'm not the only one that does that....LOL Only difference now is that I run downstairs to my football office with the 4x6 white board on the wall. I have a pad always available...bedroom, car 1, car 2...never know when the opportunity to brainstorm will come about. Now I just gotta sell her on that football office deal the Jhanawa has...that would be a true inner-sanctum of football bliss!

Let me just start by saying that Bobby Johnson is one of the best coaches in College Football. But along with that, he is one of the best human beings. As most of us know he retired yesterday from Vandy. To me he has had as much success in the SEC with Vandy as anyone could. A coaching friend of mine went to a clinic where Coach Johnson was speaking. He had a breakout session. My buddy said there were only him and 2 other coaches in the classroom. They stayed in there for 4 almost 5 hours talking about everything from Defense, Offense, and just life. Anyways, I just felt lead to say that. Now to the point. How many of you guys have taken a year off? How many of you have been doing this since leather helmets? Will you coach forever?(that question may be hard to answer) What benefits did you get from taking the year off other than the obvious (spendin time with family etc..)? I read Bobby Johnson's presser and this just got me thinking. Oh and lets make this a good thread. Please no one start making comments about Vandy and why or why they werent successful and all that stuff. Now FIRE AWAY Guys!!! I did take a year off after being head fb coach and head basketball coach as well as teaching high school English. In addition to allowing me some time with family, the year away from coaching allowed me to visit successful programs and learn from them. Most importantly, the time away confirmed to me and my wife that I need to coach to be happy. As long as I am able and allowed the opportunity, I will continue to coach. This year will be my 21st in education and my 20th in coaching, and I don't feel the least bit burned out.

Great post!
I'm starting my 26th year. Have been burnt out a few times (advice: stay away from bad jobs).
I'm really enjoying my current job (it was a bad job 8 years ago). We have a great group of kids with a little talent and are very optimistic about the upcoming season.
My dad volunteer coaches with me now (6th year with us). This will be his 48th season! He tells me this will be his last season. This is the 4th year he has told me that. (He did take a year off for financial reasons, but came back more fired up than ever).
He doesn't hunt, fish or golf. I told my mom I have to have him here or he'd be in the park somewhere teaching kids how to get in a good stance and they'd arrest him thinking he was a pervert.
We love the game. Every conversation eventually ends up around next year's team.
I also have a young son (8 years old) and I wonder if I'll still be around if/when he plays high school ball.

I think I already have (coached forever) or maybe it only feels like it.
I'm just too stupid to stay home and off the practice field-sidelines or out of the weight room.

I love coaching, but it has turned itself into a year round position for sure.
My wife and I have been having this discussion lately. "What is best for the family?" My son is entering into 2nd grade right now and I worry about not spending enough time. Also, I just weighed in at 340 (I gained 5 pounds during summer camp last week). It hurts my back and feet to stand for long periods of time. Although I am not completely out of shape as I run on the treadmill, lift weights and exercise quite a bit when I can, football just takes a lot of my free time away and it is impacting my health.
Unfortunately, for the first time ever, I actually need the money I make from coaching. So, how many burritos would I have to fold to make up for coaching, that is an answer I don't want to have to find out.
