I've always wanted to coach but it was confirmed during my freshman year of college when I found myself skipping classes to watch film and studying the playbook instead of doing finance homework.

My LB coach was a guy that I had played with two years before. He was a senior and I was a sophomore. He was also the hardest hitting meanest nastiest SOB I had ever seen on a football field. He was in college and coaching was an elective for him. Anyways, my family split up my senior year and I was able to forget all of that whenever I had pads on. The afternoon of our home opener one of my parents called me after a few drinks and proceeded to tell me how me and my brother and sister were the problem with the marriage, blah blah blah. Needless to say my mind was somewhere else during pregame. That coach took me aside and helped me understand that I had a family that would always be there for me. it showed me a side of him I didn't think existed. I knew right then that I would coach to make a difference like Zach did for me. Thanks, Zach.

I would like to think that regardless of the reasons WHY we got interested in coaching, that ultimately we put the ego aside and ascend to the pinnacle of our profession like Coach Zach. Out of some hum-dingers, this is my favorite story so far.........

Played football since I was 7 years old. Attempted to play other sports, but did not have the passion for them like I did for football. When came time for me to graduate, and I new that I would not be playing college ball, I was lost. I knew nothing else. I was the true sense of the word "jock". I went to school and worked in a plant after highschool. It took getting married and having kids to get serious about school, though. Thank GOD he never let me loose sight of what I knew I always wanted to be if I could not play anymore.... a coach. There is nothing else I would rather be.

I had a great coach my first season in Pop Warner Coach Vargas. He took the time to work with us players that had limited talent and I appreciated it. My second coach was an A55Hole Coach Reed. One day I asked him to allow me to take my cleats off because my feet where hurting real bad and he said no. When practice was over and we took a knee I removed my shoes and my socks where soaked in blood. I then got up and threw them in his face and said next time listen to me when I say I am hurt. I have since had over 20 ingrown nail operations what a pain in the rear they are but learned how to deal with them.
Because of my first 2 coaches I learned that kids need more like Coach Vargas and that I would be one of them. that was 32 years ago.

Final game of my high school days, got blown out by the perennial doormat of our league..we were horrible. Team was together for the post-game talk, coach was saying something about a tough year, the team has a bright future with the young talent coming up...stuff like that..but all I could hear was a murmur.. "Charlie Brown teacher talk". He wrapped up, we broke the huddle, young guys went to the locker room, couple of us seniors stayed on the field...I don't know what the hell I was thinking, but I guess I figured I would always remain a part of that team as long as I stayed on that field. I was crying my eyes out like countless thousands of young men do when they realize that their playing days are through...and I look up and see the head coach walking to me from the locker room. He was a bear of a man, one of the largest individuals you'll ever see. Might have seen him smile once in my playing days..and I look up and see him walking to me with the biggest smile on his face...gets up to me and says, "Son, it's gonna hurt a while, maybe even longer..and that's good-it shows this meant something to you. Remember that hurt and use it to drive you when you want something in life. I want you to know that you are going to go far in life, you have a world of potential and don't let anyone else tell you differently. Take this in, and when times get tough, remember how much hell you went through to have the privilege of playing this game."
A 1 minute speech to a kid crying his eyes out was all it took for me.

My senior year of high school when I realized I not only didn't have the ability to go to college, but I couldn't even start in high school. After that I started paying more attention to what everyone else had to do on a particular play. I still have some of the weekly game plans that my coaches made for certain games, all with different blocking adjustments and new passing plays. Also, our coaches were great men who continue to influence athletes years after they graduate.

I find it amazing some of you guys knew you wanted to coach as young as 5th or 6th grade. When I was in grade school, I was either going to be an NFL player, NBA player, or MLB player. It just depended on which sport I chose

My story is VERY different....... In my high school, the players were the coaches for our annual powder puff game. My freshman year, I got the opportunity to "coach" my female classmates. I loved the problem solving, the challenges of communication, and the thrill of winning, and it's all I've wanted since then. The other thing that got me interested was an offensive wrinkle we added that year that was a throw back to the offense we ran from 1967-1991, the Short Punt. As a double dive T-tight team, we should shift to this formation and run spinner series (including the buck lateral). I've spent nearly every night since then (basically the last decade of my life) doodling ideas and schemes, learning something and trying to re-create it. So, the single wing gets credit for first sparking my imagination. Those 2 experiences in the 15th year of my life have shaped my addiction to this game, and provided me with the only hobby I want. I want to hear your stories. . . . . . I grew up the son of a very successful coach , but never really considered ever being a coach. Injuries forced me from the game early, so I thought I'd help out with a local HS team near where I lived. However the 1 hour trek every day in my POS car was a little too much. My Wifes cousin asked me if i could halp him out with the youth team he was coaching, but I was reluctant. 1st year he made me the HC of the JV squad but refused to give me any coaching materials, playbooks, wouldn't let us use the bags etc......he told me "It's just JV, I don't care what you run" So I rummaged through my father's old coaching books, and found 2 books on the short Punt. I'm one of those guys that delves into whatever I get into, so from that point on I became a student of the game ( still am) Long story short we finished with a better record than our varsity, and almost beat them in a exhibition game.....next year I was made DC of the varsity, 2 years later I was HC of the varsity

When did I know??
I was asked to coach some 7/8 year olds for a summer basketball team almost twelve years ago. I said that this would be something fun to do for the summer. It has still been "something" fun to do since then.

My mom was a teacher and I liked the fact she had summers off. I would draw plays with a couple of friends when I was in 7th and 8th grade. We ran the split back veer and a 6-2 on defense the coach was a hard ass, drill after drill after drill
In 9th grade I moved and the coach there did a lot of team, we ran the slot I, and split 4 on Defense. I mad eup my mind then that I wanted to be a coach. As a tenth grader I switched schools to a school that offered baseball. Anyhow they ran the wing T, by this time I am falling more in love with the coaching of football seeing all of the different styles of offense and defense, Got another dose of it when I became a junior when the HC resigned and we had a new HC come in. We then a pro I type offense.
Off season my 9th grade year when the coach ran with us....thats when I knew
