NY Jets: The AP is reporting 5 assistants will not return. According to the report, assistant quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo, assistant defensive backs coach Doug Plank, special teams assistant Kevin O’Dea, pass rush specialist Chuck Smith, and defensive quality control Brian Smith will not return. The report says Chuck Smith will be joining the Tennessee Vols’ staff as defensive line coach. We have not confirmed if Smith is going to Tennessee. Another article is now indicating that Rex Ryan was premature in announcing Smith to Tennessee. www.nfl.com/news/story?id=090...s&confirm=trueI wouldn't call that "canning the defensive staff". Neither would I. I've had to let guys go before for various reasons. Usually it was volunteer guys who just didn't do what we needed them to do or were constantly stepping on other's toes. Sometimes I kept them around longer than I should have. We'll never know what REALLY happened but he still got the Jets farther than ANYBODY else expected and at the NFL level winning is the only yardstick. He'll have to prove this over time but you can't argue with what the Jets did this season.

it is a CYA move. it makes him look better to the higher ups and the media because there of course will be outrage. lord knows there has to be outrage these days.
to fire those guys was a chump move. but one has to expect it because he dad was the ultimate chump/back stabber. just ask coach ditka. His brother undercut lane kiffin at Los Angels Raider. not that I cry for kiffin but he brother did go to al and get kiffin let go. his bro was mad because he did not get the job as HC of the Raiders.
his team had a .563 winning percentage and he was going up against payton manning and seasoned colts team. I realized you have to put on the front to keep your players motivated but in reality they where not going to win that game.

I see nothing wrong with him letting go coaches at this point. His team is not playing in the Super Bowl which means that it's the offseason and time to make changes. It's not like they lost a big game in week 8 and he fired a bunch of guys. He let go five coaches that all had assistant or specialist in their title which tells me that they didn't do their jobs or he felt that they could do better in those situations.
Every team makes coaching changes this time of year. It doesn't make him a back stabber or an a$$hole, it makes him an NFL coach.

And you see quite a bit of changes following the D1 season. It's just part of big business football. Call it what you want, it happens.
When I started this thread I knew there would be a lot of interest because Rex Ryan commands a response. I don't think he'll last long in NY (just my opinion) for many of the reasons mentioned but, for me, he has brought some life to what is usually a boring, controlling, vanilla league.
His team plays physical football and that has to be respected on this forum.

I don't care for the guy and I agree with an earlier post that is Dad was the ultimate tool. Also, let's be honest. They beat a mediocre Bengals team still reeling from the death of their teammate, and without the giant choke job by the San Diego kicker they lose that one. Indy took their vaunted defense apart after the 1st quarter and 7 teams beat them in the regular season. I think Canton is a ways away.

The coaches being let go game down from ownership. Woody Johnson wanted to pare down the staff because the coaching staff was the biggest in the league.

tool or not, his players love playing for him and the improvement in that team, especially the D, in a year is hard to deny.

They went 9-7 last year, 9-7 this year.

record alone does not come close to telling you about those two teams though.

I think next year will be a better indicator. will they be a "one-year wonder" or continue to improve. They certainly have the elements on defense, especially if they can find another shut-down corner. The question will be how they handle increased expectations, particularly with the New York media. Back there, you're either a genius or a bum, with no in-between, and it turns pretty fast.

They went 9-7 last year, 9-7 this year. but this year they had a rookie qb, last year they had a hall of fame qb. I think...

I like him, you can tell his players respond to his coaching and attitude with the media and behind closed doors. That is the most important thing and the Jets have the right guy for the next 7-10 years.

He looks awfully cheerful giving the one fingered salute. Do you think he might have seen some friends from his college days?

Rex isn't Tony Dungy but he IS authentically himself.
Time will tell if he can operate as a HC in the NFL while still being himself.

I think maybe I want him to be my uncle. Not father, because that'd be any combo of traumatic, scary, and/or frightening, but uncle, who's supposed to be those things while also being awesome.
"Uncle Rex" just fits for that weirdo uncle, yeah?
