Is it just me or does Bama need to just run the ball on every down? At least until they get behind the chains.

I just don't get Texas. How do you not have a better backup QB. Sure he is the future, but he is not the present. And a shovel pass with 17 seconds left? What are you really going to get done with it?
Also, if you don't have a good backup QB don't put your qb at risk running that type of play.

I don't know if it's a case of them not having a better back up, or them not having faith in their back up. The playing calling has not really given the kid a chance to make a play and if McCoy doesn't come back in the second half I think they need to open up the playbook and make something happen. Heck they can't do any worse than they did in the first half.

I wonder how many practice reps he was given for this game?
Im pulling for Bama being an SEC fan, but I do feel sorry for this kid. I agree with whats posted above, might as well open it all up and see what happens. At least you can see what you have next season.

If the back didn't bobble it there was no problem. As for the backup QB situation, I don't know about Texas's specific situation but I do know that often a talented backup QB will transfer if he know that the QB position is set for a few years as it was with McCoy.

Gilbert was the National POY last year. He was a GREAT HS QB. But this ain't HS. It's like OC, Greg Davis, has a completely different gameplan for Gilbert. Not even close to the type stuff McCoy was doing. Not the skill level or stuff like that but McCoy threw bubbles, jailbreaks, flags, shallow crosses till the cows came home. Not much of this stuff now. Tejas is right. Their offense has gone south of the boarder.

I agree. We are seeing this more often in college ball. kids don't want to be a backup. Period.

Gilbert is gonna be an All-American before he leaves Texas for the NFL. I know he doesn't look like it now but he is a STUD!

Alabama needs to stop trying to make plays with their QB. He needs to be a game manager like he has been all season long. Hand off to Ingram, Richardson, Upchurch. Their passing game looks TERRIBLE.
I'm TiVOing...TD Texas. That was nice pass by the young fella. I agree, he's gonna be good.
True freshman in a national championship game? C'mon, guys. Be realistic. The 4 drops by his receivers don't help. The shovel pass was spot on. Another drop...by Shipley after the onside recovery.

I don't know who is going to win this game and I don't really have a horse in the race, but you HAVE to respect Coach Brown's staff at Texas.
They lose their all-World QB in the first series of the biggest game of the season. They have to turn to a freshmen who looks completely overwhelmed and they give up 17 unanswered points.
Looked really bleak at halftime but the Texas coaches have figured something out. Great stuff!

And the Texas defense...WOW! Those kids and coaches did a fantastic job. Would have been REALLY easy to roll over given what happened in the first half.
Taking nothing away from Alabama...they are playing great. But you just have to apppreciate the coaching job that Texas is doing given the situation they are in.

Gilbert is not a bad qb, bama took advantage of his greenness early on and put a ton of pressure on him. Also, it seemed like there were not many line adjustments made to pick up the blitz. The shovel pass was a baffling playcall. Gilbert made his share of mistakes but the comob of not having confidence in the kid + IMHO improper adjustments to the blitz by the QB/OL is what really Hurt Texas. Lastly that WR that dropped the pass in the endzone should of made that catch. Heck of a game.

How bout Bama's second half play calling??? Gotta step on their throat a little bit...let it get too close for comfort! On another note...lots of classy players on the field, none moreso than Ingram and McCoy

Something that's surprised me is that Saban's being criticized for scoring that last TD instead of taking a knee. I never gave it a second thought when it happened but there have been a lot of people on fan boards (not the Texas board) who were complaining about "piling on". Did you'uns ( a little Pittsburgh talk) feel the same way?

I don't think it's a big deal; some guys would've killed clock just to be safe - avoid possible fumble etc., not for sportsmanship. Fight the fight until the fight is done. If you don't like 'em scoring again, stop 'em. Otherwise, don't whine.

This was a very strange game to watch. Bama comes out the first two drives trying to look like Texas Tech and trying to throw the ball all over the field when you have two great backs who have carried you all season. Saban having a Jim Tressell moment and going for a fake punt in their own territory in the beginning of the game when you have the best defense in the country. It was apparent that the Texas backup QB could not make accurate throws when Bama dropped into coverage. Why blitz up the middle and leave your DB's in one on one coverage with Shipley? If any one noticed those were the only touchdowns he threw. The QB stared Shipley down the whole night. It looked like Saban was trying to keep Texas in the game. I didn't see any killer instinct. Just a very strange game to watch.

I didn't really get the 'Bama offensive plan. They were getting a ton of movement at the line, Ingram is a great inside runner who is excellent at falling forward and moving the pile...but they insisted on running outside and running out of the gun. I never felt like they commited to grinding it out inside. Passing on 2nd and 7, going to the gun and running the stretch ect. Heck, what happened to the direct snap to Ingram, with Julio running the Jet? That is a downhill play. Just watching it, 'Bama never had an identity on offense, when going in they so clearly had one. Line up in some pro stuff, pound it, boot McElroy out and bomb it to Julio. Sub in the speed backs and try and hit the edge with the stretch, boot again, and go back to Ingram. It almost seemed as if 'Bama crapped THEIR pants when Colt went down and started worry about not losing. Though, it's pretty easy to 2nd guess from my living room .

I don't really have any problem with the second TD to put it away. If anything, it's a compliment to the kind of capability they think Texas had at the end of the game. I thought it was a bit much at that moment, but stepping back it's just icing the game, albeit very late. It's the National Championship, I don't see much point in not doing everything you can to win the game as safely and surely as possible. If they don't score there, the opportunity for a fluke occurrence still exists, but that score firmly secures the W.
I didn't think the shovel pass was a terrible idea, it just didn't go Texas' way. Sometimes the ball bounces funny, that's why the game is great. I understand there wasn't much to gain, but don't we frequently mention how 'safe' shovel passes are? We're all geniuses here, but let's not spit on those mortals who have a bit of bad luck.

I found it laughable that the media in the weeks leading up to this game inferred that Texas was "soft" or inferior to Alabama or the SEC. Many were predicting Texas to get blown out. Unbelievable. Had any of these media people really looked at how many hs all-americans are on the Texas roster? Texas tries to get all of the top blue-chippers from a state that in most years produces the most Div. 1 players. It would be scary if they did. There would be a few more NC pelts on the wall, IMO. This never happens though, as some always get away. Thats the nature of the beast though, since in most years, you have around 20-25 scholarships to hand out. The Alabama QB and DE that made Alabama's first sack of the night late in the game (and caused the crucial turnover) are both native Texans. Texas had only lost 1 game in the past 2 years, and that was a last second loss at Lubbock. Texas showed its' true character last night when major adversity hit early in the game. Texas lost the most important player on its team. He was probably as important to the Longhorns this year as any player was to their team in the nation. I truly believe Texas wins if McCoy plays the whole game. When he went out on his 5th play, OC Davis took out probably 60-70% of the offensive gameplan. Gilbert was not allowed to open it up until the 2nd half. And with a true freshman qb playing virtually the entire game, Texas had the ball deep in its own territory late with a chance to tie or win the game. I give Alabama tons of credit though. They are a GREAT football team and are the NC this year. But they are not any better than Texas at full strength, IMO.

That's because Texas was a passing team and the old stereotype of passing teams as being "soft" still exists in some people's (including those in media) minds. Please paragraph your posts, luke - really hard to read big blocks of text like that, at least for an old-timer like me.

I am still at a loss that Bama lined up in a FIVE WIDE SET PERIOD! You must REALLY have loved the fake punt then. I thought the "fake" punt was actually the punter trying to make a play. The gunner was uncovered and Texas pulled out one of the inside guys on the snap so he wouldn't have a free run down the field. I would imagine it is a situation where the coach says, "if the gunner is uncovered, just get the snap and chuck it to him." The problem was that it was underthrown and that allowed the Texas guy to make the play on it. Also, if it was called, it was a pretty weak fake, especially with a month to prepare for Texas' return game. Just to get the ball and throw it? And in that situation? I'm 90% sure it was a sight adjustment/ "hot route", so to speak, by the punter and the gunner.

Nick Saban soesn't seem to be a guy who'd let his punter run a sight adjustment on his own.
