I'd stay right here in Ohio, specifically where I'm at right now in Cincinnati. It's a football town and some of the best ball in the country is played in this region.

I love it right here in Central Illinois. It's good old fashion small school football. The game is at its purest here and I love it.

I would like to find a school here in Florida that hasn't "arrived" and take it there.

There seem to be good places to work and bad everywhere so I started to think where I'd like to live.
I'm told (never been there) that San Diego has a great climate. That sounds good but then I hear about budget problems and I'm not so sure.
When I first moved to Virginia I planned to move back to Pennsylvania after I retired. Relatively mild summers and they love HS football, I thought. Then I went to visit my folks over Easter one year and there was a snowstorm. That made me acutely aware of how freakin cold it gets there in the winter. No thank you.
Texas is supposed to be the Mecca but I'm no longer a teacher.
Where I am in Virginia we get great athletes and the administrative support at our particular school is great. Money's not so good (What was Brophy talking about? A $6100 stipend? No kidding?). Climate? Steaming hot in the summer and flat out cold, wet, and miserable lately. Still, all things considered things aren't bad here.

For the texas guys, other than the football fever and great coaching pay, what is texas about lifestyle wise?
What is it about texas that would be a draw to the family for example?

Some may think me crazy (stupid?) because of the restrictions on us, the sometimes subprime weather, and that there is more emphasis on football in other states, but I have always been proud to be a Michigan HS football coach.

You really have to just experience Texas to understand it. Not trying to sound cocky about our state but people here are just proud of their state. It is a great place to raise a family especially if you can find a nice little town where everyone knows you. I have been at the same small school now for nine years. I do not have to worry about my kids when we go to games because I know people there are going to look after them and they know who they belong too. People just seem to be more friendly. Of course I am a little bias in my opinion.

I have a couple: my alma mater, of course. Pigeon Forge HS in Pigeon Forge, TN (to be closer to my parents) Lake Highland Prep in Orlando, FL (my cousin goes there) As far as just the area, I'd love to live in Portland, Oregon Portland, Oregon is an amazing city! And there is good football in the metro area. Inner city programs don't always do so well in football (basketball is a completely different story), but the suburban schools are usually stocked with talent. I coach across the river in Vancouver, WA (not BC), which is a suburb of Portland also. There is a ton of support in the whole metro area for football, but there are also pockets of great football throughout the Northwest. Washington: Seattle, Vancouver, Tri-Cities, Spokane. Oregon: Portland, Eugene, Salem, Medford area. I'm from Southern California and even with the number of athletes we'd get down there, the atmosphere up here is crazy for football. I don't think I could coach anywhere else. Not saying you're wrong, but my experience coaching in Oregon was way different. I thought Salem (where I coached at North) in particular was pretty darn weak, and I don't even come from one of the real amazing parts of CA. There were some pretty standout individuals that I was pretty impressed with, but teams as a whole were all slower, less athletic, and playing the same poorly run 3 and 4 WR offenses and 3-3 defenses. Anyone from AZ? I've heard there's good ball played down there with a pretty decent atmosphere for the games, etc.

I'm not saying that the athletes are all good, but I think the atmosphere is great! Like I said, no where near SoCal in terms of athlete, but the football is good. I guess I can't speak for Salem, but I've been to camps where we competed with teams from the Eugene-area and they were phenomenal.

I wonder what it is like in Hawaii..I bet coaching at the Punahoe (sp) is pretty nice Punahou is a great school. Hawaii football is great. The budget cuts we face are pretty crazy though. We have this thing called furlough fridays. Basically the entire DOE shuts down on fridays. Kids love it. Problem is, how do you have a football game on a day that unionized workers are told they can not work? Well they made an exception and allowed them to be on school grounds after 3pm. What is kind of nice about coaching here is that we are behind the mainland. What I mean by that is that a lot of stuff here is still handled old school. If a kid gets in trouble for something, they give the football coaches to autonomy to handle the problem. My alma mater is actually Sheldon, in Eugene, OR. I would rather coach here in Hawaii.

I grew up in Texas, and have coached in Texas for over 20 years. I absolutely love it. People are very friendly, and if you are a program with some tradition, the kids will run through a wall for you as a coach. Great atmosphere where on Friday nights, most towns shut down because everyone is at the game.

Teachers don't get paid for the days they don't work.

Somebody beat me to it, but an orphanage for freakishly athletic children would be ideal, no matter what state its in. I'll take good old PA where I'm at, but I'd like to see what its really like in texas. Would like to maybe coach anywhere that is small town setting where the whole town is into the team in a positive way, just t see twhat that setting is like.

Played with a guy from Sheldon at Willamette, as well as a Punaho grad. The Sheldon guy was too fast for his own hamstrings, but gosh, when he was healthy Coaching out in Hawaii does sound pretty sick, minus cost of living, etc.

Unfortunately, I can't find an athletic association website with job openings. Then you've got those "furlough" days mentioned above PLUS cost of living that make it seem impossible!
