Try no freshmen, AND no jv...kids go straight from 7th and 8th grade ball to varsity...thats our situation this year and it stinks. Kids who were good as 8th graders have dads who say "will he even get to play this year?" which makes me wonder if they are considering doing something else. we need a jv program and are going to do whatever it takes to make that happen if I have to have 120 lb runningbacks playing guard and tackle. we will make it happen. Now THIS is a real problem. The more I think about, the more I realize that I don't think the original poster has a complicated problem at all (no offense fshamrock). I just think he is going to have a crappy JV team this year. That happens at all schools comparatively, but is obviously more pronounced at smaller schools. Edit----and after reading his reply below, I think he just came to the same conclusion.

Wow, I didn't expect such an outpour of responses, thanks to everybody for the input. All in all, it's a sh!t sandwich and one way or the other we are going to have to take a big bite, I'm leaning to-wards keeping them and trying to play out some semblance of a schedule. We are in two a days now, but once school starts there will probably be a few that come out, normally I hate letting these guys play, but we may have to make some exceptions. Either way, Thursday nights aren't going to be much fun, but we'll take our lumps and drive on. My mind was made up when I pulled one of the kids aside and asked him (JV QB, who isn't very talented but is the kind of kid that you love to coach) his response was pretty simple...."we don't need those dang freshman, and I don't want to just be a practice player on varsity..give us a chance coach!"
........it surprises me sometimes how often I really don't take the time to look at things from the perspective of our players, I get caught up in everything that goes on, and before you know it I'm treating them like chess pieces in my own personal game instead of what they are...just kids

Find another school or independent youth team of similar ages nearby that has the same problem, and let them form a team together with your 9 sophs.

And to your point coachbdud, what if after a couple of losses, those 15 kids quit? It could be a risk. That stuns me. What kind of pu$$ies do you think you're dealing with? Post modern era pu$$ies. ;D
