When I was at the Gator spring game last year, they had a race between the fastest Gator and a handful of kids from the student body. With student populations as big as these schools, there's got to be an overlooked diamond in the rough when you have thousands of kids attending these institutions.
Anyone know of schools actively searching for kids that either got overlooked or perhaps never played the game but have the size and speed to find a spot?

Not exactly the same tings, I recall Texas Tech finding a kicker either last season or the season before. They had a halftime entertainment deal, make a 35 yarder or something, and the kid kicked it so well that when Leach saw it he invited the kid to come to practice and the kid made the team. Texas A&M always has the 12th man on the kickoff, a member of the student body who is athletic enough to survive and contribute on the kickoff team. Not sure how they decide, I think they have a tryout for it.

I also go to school at UCF, graduating in May...great school, and the campus has definitely expanded since I started here in '05. The new arena and the area around it, as well as the stadium, were all just paintings when I started. That goes to show how quickly things get rolling around here.
It's unfortunate that the progress of the football program doesn't parallel or exceed that of USF's currently...Everything that OJW previously said regarding the topic is about accurate, I think...the continuity and "energy" of Jim Leavitt is a strong reason to their quick progress and success...I challenge anyone to find a coach as high strung as he is. Went to one of USF's practices last week, as well as their coaching clinic last Fri. and Sat., and those kids really buy into what they are selling and seem to relish being a part of the up and coming tradition of that program.
However, I do think O'Leary has UCF on the right track...like ccox said, he is finally recruiting the athletes in UCF's own backyard, and there are a lot if you watch the football around here. I have coached in C. Florida for the past 3 years (moving west on I-4 into USF territory now) and if O'Leary can get a hold of some of the kids in the Greater Orlando area, the UCF program has nowhere to go but up...great facilities, an awesome game atmosphere (your right ccox, it is Zombie Nation, and a ton of fun), and a committed coaching staff/student body have UCF going in the right direction.

UCF is going to have some new "street cred" because Michael Jordan's son just committed to play basketball there. (His son Marcus just won a state title for Whitney Young H.S. in Illinois)....so I am assuming M.J. will be showing his face around there in the years to come!!

How dare you sir. That kind of malicious posting will not be tolerated. Now that calipari is gone maybe we can have a shot at the CUSA title. even though I graduate this summer (finally, took my sweet time) Im looking forward to what the football and basketball teams will bring to the table.
