Only other thing I coach is the adult slow pitch softball team I play on. I would rather deal with 6 year olds sometimes over my friends, they listen better and show up more often. Been down that route!! You know the phone call to say you are missing the game has gone by the wayside!!

Soccer (not my 1st choice) We have over 7,000 kids in our county that play and there is a major shortage of coaches, so for my boys to have a season I just volunteer to coach them so we don't get the dreaded letter " due to no coaches your son will not be on a team"
Adult flag football coach/player plus I'm HC of 8-9yr full contact team.

I used to coach Track as a assistant football coach before I became the MFIC. I would get back into it but our program needs so much attention in the off-season from staff development, player development, home visits, academic checks, fundraising and all the other stuff that a Head Football Coach has to do. Our program dropped football in 2006 and I am the Head Coach that inherited that situation. We were winless in 2007 (0-9) and we snapped a 28-game losing streak in 2008 in our final game to finish 1-7. I think coaches have to assess their particular program situation and decide from there if they intend to coach other sports. Whatever you decide to coach, I believe it should enhance not subtract from football. For example, I have an assistant who coaches JV softball and that has proven frustrating. He's a football coach first and foremost and JV softball does nothing for recruitment, motivation of football players out of season, the weightroom, off-season drills, etc. I believe any assistant should be sure they are helping the football program achieve its goals when they coach other sports. This is especially true at small schools where coaching staffs are stretched so thin as it is. Just my thoughts on coaching other sports.

i have coached basketball, baseball, track, and TENNIS.......
what an adventure tennis was.....the a.d. came to me after tennis coach quit and said "one of us is gonna coach tennis, and it ain't gonna be me!" a.d. was an old timer.....football guy......
good thing my college roommate taught me how to play or i wouldn't have been able to keep score.....and i still needed help from a parent to oversee a tiebreaker.......

At one school: Football and Wrestling.
At another school: Football and Softball. FYI: You cannot coach girls like you do the guys. When you yell at them, they go into a shell and won't communicate. It was life changing to say the least. And their dads, are the worst parents to deal with...psycho!
At current school: Just football. AWESOME!!

FYI: You cannot coach girls like you do the guys. When you yell at them, they go into a shell and won't communicate. It was life changing to say the least. And their dads, are the worst parents to deal with...psycho! AMEN. Some days my girl throwers make me feel like I need doctoral thesis in psychology just to get them through practice without crying. Boys you can just say "Throw farther, jack-hole". Girls it becomes trying to guess which boy/teacher/test/car/biological/weather/astrological/political/imaginative problem it is and then remove that from their vocabulary before even trying to coach the tech. That said, girls are wonderful to coach and I generally enjoy the experience with them far, far more. Anyone else's boy throwers a bunch of friggin' weirdos?

Done basketball and baseball both some years, just basketball other years.
Always done powerlifting, but doesn't count as a 'sport' in my mind.
Baseball is not my thing.

"I've never understood doing football and baseball. To me it seems like your working against yourself. Wouldn't you rather have your kids out for track building better athletic skill sets and learning a little bit of work ethic and toughness." There is a method to my madness. We are a small school and most of my athletes play 3 sports. This is how I make sure my baseball/football players lift.

I used to coach two sports. I had to make a decision, did I want to be good at coaching two sports or be great at one sport? I chose to be great at one, and I chose football.
Just I side note, when I coached two sports, I was single. When I coached one sport (football), I got engaged and eventually married. That also may have had something to do with it. lol !!!

Yeah, most schools require coaching two sports, that is, if you are a PE guy. Began coaching just Varsity Football (assistant) and JV Basketball (Head) six years ago, but have also taken Track over the past two seasons (Throws). First off, yes I am a nutjob for doing three sports, especially since I also teach English, and the fact that my wife is drop dead gorgeous. My golf game has suffered and well, with new baby, I had to give up on Track this year.
And yes, my boys throwers were all knobs...during one meet, one of my guys chased another one around trying to punch the kid in the arm. By the time my voice carried over to them, one was stuck in the Discus net like a stranded dolphin in a fishing net...for some reason we haven't been invited back to the meet.

This is what I have learned about coaching females. The best thing about coaching females is their high level of emotion...the worst thing about coaching females is their high level of emotion. Sheesh.
Another comical story...had a young lady who decided to wear a jean skirt and loose fitting shirt to practice one day. Midway through practice, I find that she has wandered off to the tennis courts to watch a match, so I scream across the field to her that she needs to get her throws in. Her response? "Coach! IF I THROW, MY BOOBS ARE GOING TO FALL OUT OF MY SHIRT...DO YOU WANT TO SEE MY BOOBS FALL OUT OF MY SHIRT?!" As the blood drained from my face, I realized that every participant and onlooker of the tennis match was looking over at me curious as to my answer to the question.

I coached Jr. Boys and Girls B-ball. I am proud to say the Jr. Girls won our district with a perfect season of 26-0. My daughter plays on the team and it was fun for most of the time (girls are for sure wired differently then boys) to play both the parent and coach role with her.
I found the girls to be more focused then the boys and better at understanding the offensive and defensive systems.

I coached and HC'd wrestling for 11 years. Had to give it up after the kids started getting active. I have coached track a few times, but have always tried to get out of it successfully. I have a passion for coaching strength and conditioning which pays nothing but benefits to all programs.

Head Boys Track coach. I love it, it gets me ready for football and is a release. I just hate the unorganized Saturday meets. But this year I did a good job of avoiding those.
