Actually a buddy of mine coaches at a school and they give a "C" sticker in their school for kids who achieve in citizenship things too. He puts an update of the football program in every teacher's mailbox every Monday of the season and has something written up that says if they have a player who is also an outstanding citizen, by all means bring it to the fb program's attention.
That kid gets a C sticker on his helmet. Now I admit that based on that you could give em for feeding the dog at home, taking out the garbage, etc. but it accomplishes 3 things:
1) Involves the entire school in the football program WITH ownership 2) Recognizes kids for being student-athlete-citizens 3) Addresses your concern with player behavior and shows that you want to know about good kids.

That is a great idea.
We will b doing something similar this season. I am keeping track of honor roll, playing another sport(s), wt room etc. Kids who make the "A" honor roll will be given "x" number of stickers for each quarter they made it. "B" honor roll will get "x" number as well. Stickers will also be awarded for those who make certrain attendance clubs for the wt room over the summer.
We will then earn them as a team for accomplishments during the season.

I like helmet awards...then my players can tell who the studs are on the other team and key on them right away.
They really are a lot of work and the whole idea hardly ever comes out "fair" in the end. I stopped using them a dozen years ago. Although I do like the academic ideas. Anything that pushes them in the classroom would be a positive and worth the effort.

My goal is not to reward the exceptional player but my goal is not to neglect the sub par player either. I guess if you guys are willing to give stickers for a 1000+ reasons ( little Johnny was able to figure out how all his pads fit into his girdle) then by all means use them. But do me a favor. Look at any football team that uses helmet stickers and I guarantee the stars of the team will have 20x the amount than Little Johnny who stands on the side hoping the Coach does not put him in. I recommend that if you must do stickers. Do them for one category only. WINS. Then the whole team gets them if they do their job. Unless of course you don't win very often...

We put the helmet stickers on the back of the helmet. By the time you notice the stickers we are probably running by you. If you see stickers on the front of a kids helmet then yes, hes probably one of our feature kids and you know about him already anyhow.
And yes, we like to give the stickers for all sorts of reasons. You make the focus what you need the focus to be. perhaps you are in a place where kids are not strong, you make a big deal about weight room attendance, progress and reaching goals. perhaps you are at a place where practice attendance is poor or work ethic is poor. you make a big deal about those things. Perhaps you work at a place that has been in the playoffs for the last 35 years and you are only concerned with winning as everything else is going great, then give stickers for the wins. Its not rocket science for sure.

I firmly believe that you need to reward the individual despite team efforts- and that you can't worry about making Little Johnny feel bad for not getting helmet stickers...consider it constructive criticism- the kids are babied enough- if you want to breed a competitive team some feelings will get hurt...it's the nature of competition- winners and losers
As a young buck I wanted to be like the older varsity studs with all the stickers and I knew I had to work hard to get there. Those stickers (among other things) motivated me to work hard and get better.
We currently reward kids for team goals only, and they only receive the stickers if we win- it's a GREAT idea in theory, but it sucks if you go 5-5 (a la this season).
If the kid works extremely hard- sells out for your program as a player, but the rest of your team doesn't, it's safe to say that you won't win many games, but some individual recognition might be enough to salvage the season as a positive experience for him.
