I just finished this book. Anyone else read it? Thoughts?

I read it about two weeks ago. I thought it was a great story. My first thought, and this may be just because I believed this before I read the book, was that great deal of their success was due to getting their offensive line to fire off the ball so well. My next thought was that I would have expected a bit less color in the language of a religion studies teacher.
I think good coaching was what got the streak started at DeLasalle. But after a few years the reputation the DeLasalle built, and the athletes that that reputation attracted, had to have played a role in keeping the streak going.

I read the book a few years ago and I loved it. Even just reading part of it gets me pumped up to go coach. And yeah I was able to see just a couple clips of their offense and I watched their O-line play, and it was just amazing how fast they are able to get off the line.

I have read the book 2 times now. I've seen a few games by them. It is amazing how fast they get off the ball and the technique they use. They are like robots all with the exact same technique. I know that their weight program is a very good one. Their players work harder than just about anyone's in the nation. Last year in the playoffs when the Jaguars played the Patriots there were 3 players mentioned in that book in uniform for that game. Derek Landri, Matt Guiterrez and Maurice Jones Drew.

Reading that book last year in March got me on a football high that lasted all summer. I'm buying copies for several of my leaders this year to see if it influences them like it did me. The Chapter about the Polly game is so unbelievable.
Has anybody watched any of the documentaries? I wonder if they are any good?
What about the philosophy of conditioning like they do all summer? Some of the research I read suggests waiting until the five weeks prior to the season?

I havent read the book yet but definitely plan on it. But what are you talking about with conditioning? What is so special about how they do it?

I read the book also and it does give you a great football high. I learned about the book on this board and since I have had almost our entire staff read it and they all have the same reaction. I also read "one great game" which is about the De La Salle vs Poly game which is talked about in the game stands tall. That is also a good book but not as good a Game stands tall.

I convinced our assistant principal to buy 25 paperback copies for our bookroom. I encourage our kids to read it by giving them off-season points. I also tell them to get a book report out of the deal with their English teacher, since its a lengthy book. We are trying to build our program, and the kids enjoy the book and the way De La Salle kids work together and care about one another as teammates. It is a great read for all coaches, especially a new head coach or someone aspiring to be.

Maybe the best football book I have ever read. I love the accountability that their players have towards each other.

I read this book a couple of years ago when they came up here to WA. state to play Bellevue and really enjoyed it. I have tried to get as much information over the years about the way they create their team chemistry and just lihe the accountablilty their players have to each other and the stafff. Watched the documentary ESPN did on them called 151 and was shocked at how much people outside of HS football payed attention to what they accomplished. The greatest thing is how little they dealt with that streak and just tried to make it normal for the players.

Hello!
After reading these posts I have become very intrested on the book. Perhaps I should put it on my Amazon.com order list.
I would, however, like to know about the book's religious views. I understand De La Salle is a catholic school but how much does that reflect on the book and the story itself?

I understand De La Salle is a catholic school but how much does that reflect on the book and the story itself? It does not preach to you, it basically is the story of the teams year as well as some back story on the coach and little bit on how the school was founded. The book is not based on religion at all. Does have a good message about many things and is a book that is hard to put down.

I've read it about 3 times now and it never gets old. For me it really sends home the message about why I coach and what I want to accomplish as a coach.

This was on a list of books a seasoned coach told me to read when I told him I wanted to be a HS coach someday. It's a great book and well worth the time/money!

The more I read this thread the more intrested I get in the book.
The reason I asked about religion is that I'm a bit reserved when it comes to... how should I put it, divine things in life. But since I've heard nothing but praises, I should get my hands on it.

As a coach, player, or fan of high school football; this book is a must read. You won't be able to put it down.

There's a movie, I guess the documentary, "Perfect Effort". I had it bookmarked. Google it and it should come up.

its a great book, ive also read "one great game" against long beach poly in 2001, and have a copy of a documentary "1: the story of the longest winning streak in football" www.amazon.com/Behind-Longest-Winning-Football-History/dp/B000693YI0as well as a broadcast copy of the 2001 poly game described in "when the game stands tall" that featured maurice drew, matt gutierrez, marcedes lewis, winston justice, darnell bing, hershel dennis, manuel wright, derek landri and more they are all great to read/watch....if youve ever seen DLS play in person they are fun to watch the religion doesnt really come out much at all in any of the books or documentaries....its just great coaching, that's about it. pretty sure DLS basically trains year-round, i think they take like a month off in january

Got my copy on Amazon.com and it's on its way. Since I live in the far corner of the world, it takes nearly a month to get here But every time I read this thread it seems like worth the wait!

When you get there, tell me if the chapters on the Polly game blow your mind?
How many of you would make your seniors or leadership council read this in the summer? I want to try that....
