Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but the undefeated Auburn year in 05(?)......the Tigers were scheduled to open with USC that year, but they backed out. That would've settled their claim right there, IMO> You are wrong. Auburn went undefeated in '04. They had opened home and home with USC in 02 and 03, and completed that series. They had Ball State on the schedule and Ball St. backed out for a bigger payday with someone else. Auburn had to scurry and find a replacement and could only get The Citadel. Many have said that hurt our chances, but bottom line is that. USC and OU were preseason #1 and #2, and they went wire to wire undefeated. The other 117 D-1 teams (aside from the 20 or so that had a shot at one of those 2) were playing for #3 the entire season and didn't know it, or in other words, the Big 10, SEC, ACC, Big East, etc, were all eliminated from the NC the day the first polls came out. Real friggin fair huh? The same thing was setting up to happen to Alabama the following year...Bama fans claimed they'd have had enough "national respect" that the polls would have "given" them their rightful spot in the BCSCG by leapfrogging them over an undefeated TX or USC team. Of course they finished losing to LSU and Auburn and never got the chance to prove that. And of course it wouldn't have happened.

You got me on this one, because I could care less about outcomes. As I have said several times on this site, my ONLY goal is "win the next play" I don't worry about stats, scores, wins, championships or any other outcome based items. Process based. Align properly, read keys properly, play your technique to the best of your ability. I find this point of view very strange. So do you encourage your team to just scrimage other teams? No point in playing, since the outcome of the game doesn't matter. Really what does it matter that they read their keys properly or align properly? If they don't, they will lose their matchup on that play, but that is an outcome and you don't care about those. Infact, if you don't care about any outcome based items, nothing your players do should matter. Them doing things "properly" is an outcome. They either successfully mastered their technique on a given play or didn't. I don't live in a surreal world, I live in a tangible, competitive one and prepare my kids for the same. Does that mean win at all costs? No, but value is placed on outcomes because that is what they will be judged on their whole lives. WIN the next play. That is all that matters. How? By the PROCESS. Alignment, key, techniques are PROCESSES. Those are things that you actually do. The outcomes are the results of properly executing the processes better than the opposition. Seems simple, effect, effecient, and NOT strange to me. The blueprint to success in business and in life, and universally recognized as a common approach by those considered "successful" by others.

You are saying win the small battles to win the war. No disagreement there. You want to win, you just approach it step by step and through things you can control. No problem there, in fact I think it is the right way to look at things. It appeared you didn't care if you won or lost, which would be weird. I think most successful people may shrug off their failures, but they eventually have a desire to be successful, or likely they wouldn't be.

No, I don't really care if my players win or lose. I care if my player isn't aligning properly, if they are misreading keys/executing the incorrect responsibilities, if they do not hustle, and if they do not play with passion. All the other stuff takes care of itself.
This ties in PERFECTLY with what you suggested...as I would never worry about "not playing for the 'national championship' (of which there is no NCAA national championship in Div 1 football). Just emphasize winning your play, which is the ESSENCE OF competition and sports.
