Coaches, I am a youth coach in a program with out a lot of money. We have to practice our first 3 weeks at a small field in fort lauderdale, FL that has no lines, before we move to our normal practice field, which will also have no lines.
I was wondering if there are any tricks to help lining a field or ways to do it cheaper than normal? any ideas? I have never done one before. I do have the dimensions.
I was thinking about making 40 yard sections of the field for the different age group teams.

Whats a line Case? Oh, you mean those things they had on the real fields we used to play games on, lol! Sorry for being a smarta$$, we didnt have lines on our practice fields either but didn't seem to be a problemo for us? But, if you must have lines, get your corners square, get some twine, stakes, and a good measuring tape, measure it off very accurately the 1st time, go steal some field lime and a spreader from the little league baseball(real cheap lol) and you're there! From then on just try to mark it off before the old lines disappear and its easy! Thats as cheap as I can think of, lol! But seriously, when we moved to our own youth field, we went with the 40 by 80 yard field with no goal posts since we couldn't kick anyhow and wrapped up 2 yds off the chains, having an 8 yd 1st down! Got the idea from playing in a football tournament and seeing how they did it, worked real nice. More 1st downs, more scoring, more excitement! Kinda goes with the smaller players, smaller ball=smaller field, less work for you!

They lined the field 4 weeks before we needed it. So what we did was mow the lines. It worked great!

shoot....I think I've spent about $50 in lining paint wherever I've been ....
MARKING the field is essential in knowing where you line up and how you defend the field.
yard marker.....some twine...and you're set

Deisel fuel will burn a permanent line in the field. It is a one time deal. I would not do it, but I have been where it has been done and it lasts forever.

lawnmower and set the blade down to the bottom setting. We mow in all our lines, hashes, boundries on all our practice fields.

Brophy, do you use the aerosol paint and spray the lines?
I can't kill the grass we practice at a school yard, the lawn mower may be a good Idea, but the grass is kept pretty short already. I found out that the city will line a field, but we have 7 teams that have to practice on it. so I will have to line a small 40 or 30 yrd section off to the side so my team will get used to where they are on the field.

Go to wal-mart and buy the cheapest white interior flat latex (water based) paint. Cut it 50/50 with water and apply it with an inexpensive garden sprayer. It will last about 2 weeks until you have to reapply.

I think I will use the latex paint, here in florida the grass grow supper fast in the summer and it will be the closest thing to the real thing.

Field Paint is about $4 a can, it can be bought at any team sports outlet. We but it by the case and use it all the time, it lasts a week or so and washes out in the rain.

rofl! In that case... here are a few more inventive techniques:
1. Goldbonds medicated powder 2. formaldehyde 3. charcoal briquettes (for day games only) 4. use a hoe with 2" depth, fill them in with water and vanilla extract or food coloring 5. blowtorch (lasts three years before regrowth, nice!) 6. cheap white deoderant stick 7. duct tape 8. sausage links 9. pebbles, concrete, or cobblestones
or my personal favorite...
10. lighter fluid, yard stick, and a match!
Sorry. Seriously... get a seed spreader at the dump or for five bucks and tape off the sides so that only the desired line length in the middle remains. Fill it with whatever you are gonna spread. Seed spreaders have flow turn offs and amount regulators; good for 90 degree turns. If making straight lines is a challenge, put down mason lines and stakes for guides, first.
Hope that's a little more helpful, gl.

Don't use lime - use paint. and you better get permission before using diesel! After we lined our field we put grass killer on the sidelines for the five yard marks. Hopefully, it will be easier to find the marks the next time.

I just saw in walmart that they are selling 7-man flag football field strips for making ten yard and sideline boundaries. It cost 21 dollars. It is vinyl strips, held fast with stakes.

Another idea is if you just need boundaries, is get a few rolls of that florescent marking tape and use that.
