so what would you say they are (and maybe how you reinforce them)? Blocking (strikes, body leverage, feet, block destruction ) Tackling (form tackle, angle tackle, 2-man tackle) Ball Security (catching, fumble recovery, stripping, mesh) what else?

Hustling(creating opportunities)
I know coaches may not consider hustling a football fundamental. I'm only speaking from the games that I've watched and the games that I've coached. Relentless hustle is a fundamental. Blocking and tackling suffer without hustle. And, so many opportunities are gained or lost because of the level of hustle teams put out.

I tell the assistants I work with that we as position coaches teach TECHNIQUE and EFFORT. Everything really comes down to that. Brophy of course is right, Blocking, Tackling, Ball Security/Turnovers are the basics, but I break it down for coaches as TCHNIQUE and EFFORT. A position coach's job is to coach his position's technique and the players' effort, every day, every rep.

I tell my team "We have to do the little things right to make the big things happen". We always work on the fundamentals, ie;blocking, tackling, ball control but this helps them understand why. I think as Coaches we often forget to explain the why.

You can teach all the the fundamentals of the game, but without hustle your not mentally right as a team. People joke sometimes about my teams because you hear them shout "don't walk on my field" during sprints or laps around the field when the whistle is blown. At first the newbies think I mean MY Field. It's "my field" as in the players(team). Teaching leadership is important as well.

Good question Broph, Like some of the guys said, to teach anyone anything you need a certain amount of discipline and hustle 1st=gotta have their full attention, then try to make it fun and interesting enough to hold it! Blocking= we worked mostly on the how, as the who's and where's didn't change too much in our youth ball league. Tackling= was probably my no.1 pet peeve, do it safely and do it right and that along with lining up in the right spot, and pursuing to the ball properly was 90% of our defensive practice time. Ball handling and security really covers a lot of area but is also in my "big 3"= How to hold the ball(4pt grip), how to run with the ball(i.e. good running posture, reading and cutting off blocks), how to strip the ball, how to give and take a handoff, how to throw the ball, how to catch the ball, how to run a few simple pass routes to put yourself in a position- (to catch the ball, lol) how to toss or pitch the ball, how to change the ball to your other arm while running, how to snap the ball and take a snap, etc, etc, etc... This is why we had 5-7 plays on offense, 1 base defense we ran all the time(with yes, only zone coverage, lol), only a quick punt, 1 wedge ko return and never kicked an extra point! Toooo many fundamentals and tooo little time. And oh yeah, almost forgot about the basic rules of the game and player etiquette, gotta squeeze this info in there somewhere, hard to play a game, if you dont know the rules!

Stance and takeoff are where fundamentals start in my opinion.

Stance, long snapping (very important!!!), catching, passing, hand-offs, pursuit angles. I would worry about teaching them who to block before how to block. I'd rather have a half-assed block against the right guy than a pancake against the wrong one.

brophy: When coaching the true "bobbleheads" (age 7 and under), never forget the first fundamental: "No, Timmy, the cup protector goes INSIDE the football pants..."

Hustle, Stance, and proper tackling technique are my "Big 3". If you aren't going full-speed but everything else is perfect you will loose to a team that is going full bore but may not do everything right. If your stance is sloppy you're easy to beat mostly because of leverage. If you can't tackle properly, you can't bring down a guy who is hustling and fired out of his proper stance before getting the ball.
