Well, we have moved to 7-0 on the year, and are one game away from the winning the championship. However, due to the economy we had a team leave the league over the summer (private school, not enough kids) and so the league voted to have everybody keep an eigth game, we'd have to play somebody twice. Well, when they generated the schedule, somehow our team we have to play twice is our 7th and 8th game. We came into tonight 6-0 and so did they, we played at their house and beat them 55-50. They hold the tiebreaker, so if we lose next week, we play them again at their house. We get them at home this week and so now the chess match begins. They know us and we know them, and I'm very concerned about our guys taking them lightly. The reason I said this is we actually led 47-22 and they go on a 12 point run and come back 47-44. We made it 55-44 on our next possession, but we again can't stop them and they make it 55-50 with 1:12 left to go. Had there been more clock left, I'm not sure how we'd have fared, luckily for us, we got one first down (they had a TO left) and we were able to run out the clock. So we dominated them early (actually led 26-8 at one point), but I don't feel like it was "real" b/c they came back on us. They are deep, and much bigger and faster than us, we just answered late when we had to.
I guess this is a long way of asking, how do you go about preparing and keeping the kids focused on a team they beat, but didn't play well when you have to turn around and play the SAME team again in a week? I had this happen in HS ball one time where I tied the district leader and we had a 3 way tiebreaker the following week. We got the bye and ended up losing to a team we beat by a TD by 14 points (14-0) in one quarter. I always felt like I allowed the kids to take that team too lightly and it kinda haunts me to this day (this was over 10 years ago, so YES I have issues with letting things go). I haven't even been close to a situation like this in a while, and my fears are rekindled. Just looking to see if anyone has had a similar situation and what you did to answer the bell when you had to play an opponent you previously had beaten eariler in the season.
